Decided to go with a Chip on my 2001 A4 1.8T, what are YOUR best results?

After going cross-eyed through so much research on power addition to this car I have decided to just give the car a little hp boost with a chip and keep this car primarily stock. I dont want to lose diveability/mileage/too much money on a car that isn't meant to be my stoplight to stoplight beast. That I will save for another purchase. So I am curious what results YOU owners have had (and with what brands) considering I cant just go by the manufacturers promises. I'd prefer real world info. I thought about upgrading the turbo to the K04, but after reading thread after thread it just doesnt seem to be worth it for the kind of power gains I am after (200-230hp would be nice) Just seems like overkill and WAY more expensive. To those who already have a similar setup, does the MPG remain the same, better, or worse? (I understand some of them have programmable modes) Thanks for the help guys...I'm already planning the next audi purchase...something faster...that research continues... I'm hooked!

I will also say this, the K04 turbo kits arent all that much more expensive than some of these chips and it would give me a platform to build on down the road if I wanted. Most manufacturers clain that no fuel map mod is needed to directly bolt in the K04, but it is of course recommended to get the full potential from the turbo. Also possibly needing the addition of exhaust etc to even make it work.

I've had 3 chips on the same car

When I bought my car, it came with a suprise CTAPP chip installed. I'm not sure if the tune was wrong for my motor, or if I had some other issues since resolved, but I was unimpressed overall. It felt sluggish on the low end and peaky when it revved.

KMD Tuning removed the CTAPP and installed a Dahlback which I LOVED. Drove it back to back with the CTAPP and the butt dyno confirmed an increase in power, delivery felt smoother, and I never had any problems with it.

When I wanted more power, I went the more expensive route. I had the Dahlback removed by AWE when they installed their K04 kit which comes with a GIAC. While I enjoy the extra power, I'd agree it wasn't worth the money. Very drivable with minimal lag, but the top end does run out of breath.

The chip alone, however, is some of the most fun money can buy. If you're interested, my CTAPP and Dahlback chips are for sale. Email me. /shameless plug

Thanks for the response!

I too was considering the K04 package from AWE, but add the exhaust and I just cant justify the cash right now. Perhaps later when its more of a "project car" and not my main transportation. Then maybe I'll get a bit crazy with it

So i'm still chip shopping for the best deal for now.

2000 B5 A4 - APR stage 1 - Borla - log charts

Here are 2 starts from datalogging 2000 B5 A4 1.8T manual with APR stage 1 and Borla cat back. HP calculated from rpm and torque (and as ballpark MAF g/sec x 1.25).

To run a K04 setup you will want a high flow exhaust and a FMIC. Without both of those you wont get the most out of the K04-15. Both of them even help get the most out of a K03.

As for the best chip for the 2001, I would suggest the GIAC Xchip. It runs about 18-21psi depending on the gear your in. Another option would be the APR chip. Best thing is to figure out if your going to go with a larger turbo down the road because some tuners offer upgrade prices on the tuning for the larger turbo kits while some dont. So if you might be looking at going with a K04-15, then the GIAC might be the better choice.

My take on the 1.8T upgrade (with cash outlay and DIY in mind):
- 3" test pipe (not difficult, not expansive under $200)
- Stage 2 chip (easy, not too expansive; depending on model year, get matching chipped ECU from forum)
- Boost gauge ($150 or less)
- FMIC (ebay kit, $300) when next timing belt job is due
- CAT back exhaust (unfortunately, expensive; my car came with Miltek, love it).
- K04 or hybrid (certainly earlier if turbo is failing); I had my failing K03 rebuilt and for $200 more got a flow optimized hot side and a K04+ compressor wheel in machine housing. $700.
- Agressive tune (very happy with Giac PC16 ($300, had spare ECU)and injectors ($160) for my nDBW/DBC AEB).
- sooner or later: upgraded clutch (I have Southbend Stage 3, stock driveability/feel).

I am flowing 185 g/sec (never logged stock) now, 18 psi boost.
With Stage 2 and stock fuel, 165 g/sec. Very similar to PC16 up to 4k rpm, but then the 31 lb injectors with the PC16 make a huge difference.

Well considering my new broken ankle and I'll be off work for a few months I am definitely not going with the expensive option at this point. I'll probably just chip it and leave it be after I get back to work and get things leveled out. Perhaps in the coming years when this car gets shifted to more of a toy, i'll explore the upgraded turbo option. Thanks for the responses guys.
