This. Even GOOD parts stores are at the mercy of their databases, which sometimes have errors. I just got a wrong part for another vehicle from NAPA, and my local NAPA folks know their stuff. If it doesn't fit, don't assume your car is wrong.

That's the right switch. It should be near the shift cable entry. The ball rides on the shift quadrant inside the transmission and the three pins are neutral safety, reverse lights, and power. The plug will only go it one way. The wires are very susceptible to damage and corrosion from road debris. My reverse lights quit working because one wire had rotted off at the plug. A new plug is available at a dealer.

If you have the 4.7 V8 that means you have the 545RFE trans,no real neutral safety switch. It's called the range selector something and is part of the solenoid pack(must service as whole component) located above the valve body. It's expensive also, there are 2 versions with one version being real expensive.

What are the symptoms of a neutral safety switch?

How do you bypass the neutral safety switch on a Jeep Cherokee?

It is on the passenger side just above the pan. You do not have to remove it from the tranny but it does give you a bit more room to work if you do. One wire is solid black and the other is black with a yellow stripe. Just splice them above the switch and you will completely bypass the neutral section of the switch.
