The 05/06 S is regarded as one of the more robust, desirable models. You will love the car. Good luck! 04-09-2011, 05:31 PMJoin Date: Apr 2011 Posts: 6 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts One horror story, i beg your pardon , obviusly you are a FOE and must be working for BMW-tell the truth-several problems with 2002-2006 years and ONE IS THE TRANSMISSION FAILS!!!!! THERE are numerous documented cases. JUST be honest.... 04-09-2011, 05:43 PMJoin Date: Apr 2011 Posts: 6 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts 04-09-2011, 05:48 PMJoin Date: Apr 2011 Posts: 6 Likes: 0 Received 0 Likes on 0 Posts 04-09-2011, 05:48 PMJoin Date: Jun 2010 Location: Vancouver Island, Canada Posts: 3,332 Likes: 0 I don't work for BMW or anyone else related to the industry, and my only personal experience is with my own 2006 Non-S. However, I know there are a ton of members on here with solid R53s without failed transmissions. I'm not denying there are problems and I did suggest that the OP have the potential purchase be inspected by a qualified mechanic, which is ALWAYS advisable when looking at a used car. Frankly I take any ranting and raving from someone with single digit post counts with a grain of salt. Obviously you have had a bad experience and I am sorry that you got a lemon. However, trashing an entire generation of cars based on that is ridiculous. Second generations are not without their issues either. If you need solid reliability, consider a 2006 Cooper Non-S, they are known to be quite reliable. If you need bulletproof, get a Honda. As for your link, none of the S models have the CVT transmission, which is prone to failure. All first gen auto Non S have the CVT, and yes, by all accounts they are a ticking time bomb. 04-09-2011, 05:49 PMJoin Date: Oct 2006 Location: Fairfax, VA Posts: 2,652 Likes: 0 In my opinion the only Gen1 (2002-2006) to be avoided are the R50 with CVT and R50 with 5-speed Midlands transmissions. The JCW keeps the same six-speed single clutch automatic from the previous model years. On the surface, most drivers and passengers will only notice the different shift levers between the two automatic gearboxes.
Is a Mini Cooper 6 speed? The Mini Cooper S can now be ordered with a six-speed automatic transmission. A spontaneous response, quick shift times and direct multiple down-shifts at kickdown will enthuse also the Mini pilot who prefers a sporty driving style for an automatic transmission.
Are any Mini Coopers manual transmission?Yes—in fact, all Mini Coopers come factory built with manual transmissions. While 2020 was an exception—that year's models were all automatic—Mini reasserted its commitment to the stick shift in 2021 by adding new cars with manual transmissions to its lineup.
What are the common problems with Mini Coopers?Across all models, the most common Mini Cooper problems include automatic transmission failure, water pump leaks, clutch failure, and power steering pump failure. Made by BMW, the Mini Cooper is known for its sporty, unique look, and for being a fun, versatile subcompact vehicle.
