2014 jeep grand cherokee camshaft position sensor location

Hello all, I hope this is in the right section. I have 14 grand Cherokee limited 3.6L check engine light came on went to autozone for the scanner and the Cam shaft position sensor came up. From what I’ve seen it’s an easy fix but where the hell are they lots of different information online and also I called dealer for pricing and they said there are 2 sensors for my car is this true? Thank you.

Pretty sure that is true, the newer engines often have a cam position sensor for each cam and/or each bank of the engine.

Looks like its at on the top of the valve cover near the rear on both banks of the engine. There is a video of changing it on youtube in a mini-van. From the appearance and the link I pasted, it looks like each sensor has two pick-ups, one per cam shaft and its mounted in the middle of the two camshafts on each bank.

The Code the auto store read would probably tell you which bank set the code.... ....the confusing thing, sometimes they start the count at 1 and sometimes they start the count at 0.....

Thank you couldn’t really find a proper video, Here’s the dam kicker the dam check engine light went away earlier when I turned the car on and I’ve turned it on and off a few times no light. Still should change it anyway.

Did you have any problem with the engine when the CEL came on the first time?

If the PCM doesn't see the problem for a certain amount of time or a certain number of repetitions, it will turn off the CEL.... ....if it sees the problem again, it will turn on the CEL....

Up to you if you want to do the job or not.... ....its possible it was a one time glitch and you'll never see it again, but not likely.... ....if the engine was running poorly when the light came on, personally I'd replace it, but you could wait till the light comes back..... ....if the engine ran fine and you wouldn't know anything was wrong except for the CEL, you could wait till the light turns on again....

I'd try cleaning the connector, even pulling out the sensor and cleaning the sensor pad... That is if the affected sensor is on the side that it is exposed... ...if the affected sensor is under the upper plenum, it wouldn't be worth it to take all that apart just to clean a connector.... ....of course, if you're changing the plugs, clean the connector while changing the plugs...

What code are you getting? Is it the P0340-CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT - BANK 1 SENSOR 1? That particular CPS is located right at the firewall on the passenger side. It's tight but you can get to it and the harness.

I've been having the same issue intermittently for the past 3 years. When it acts up, the Jeep starts up really rough and noisy. I turn the Jeep off and restart and usually goes away on its own, as does the CEL eventually. I have checked the harness, the connection, tested for voltage, etc. Can't run this one down.

The Cam position sensor is for reference for the ignition and fuel injection..... ....to tell whether the cylinder is on the intake stroke or the power stroke, the exhaust stroke or the compression stroke.... Remember, the crank has to rotate twice for the engine to go through an entire cycle.... ...the Crank Position Sensor can tell what position the piston is in for each cylinder, and is used as the timing for actually firing ignition/injector, but it can't tell which of the 2 different possible strokes, what position the cam is at can tell you that, thus the cam position sensor....

if the PCM doesn't see a Cam Position Reference, it makes a guess and has a 50/50 shot of guessing right... ....if you have a wasted spark system, that fires on the exhaust stroke as well as the compression stroke, like many modern engines do, then it really makes no difference for ignition, the spark plug fires every-time the piston approaches TDC.... ...so if the PCM guessed wrong, then injectors would fire at the wrong time, during the power stroke, and spray gas against a closed intake valve, but most of the fuel would remain there and be sucked in during the actual intake stroke.... ....so the engine runs, but doesn't run well....

Again, this is generic for most engines, it could have changed or the 3.6L pentastar might not have a wasted spark....

I'm not too familiar with the VVT system, and likely the CPS also is involved in the adjustments made by the VVT.... ....so its possible the malfunctioning sensor causing rough running might be because the VVT changes cam timing improperly....

They typical also build a check into the PCM software to check the Cam timing and warn you if its changed, that could indicate a skipped tooth on the timing belt or chain.

If this has happened several times, why not just get a new sensor and install it?

Did you have the X56 warranty (cylinder head replacement) done on your vehicle?

Was starting to notice a rough start prior to the CEL, but other than that ran fine on the highways no lag in Torque or nothing. I did just finish a one way trip down to Florida from Pa non stop driving and I was towing another car behind.

Mine is saying (bank 2) so I’ll assume that’s on the driver side then? Passenger side looks easy to get to but looks like I’ll have to remove the upper pelum. I just went to the dealer and bought 2. Should I replace in pairs? Or it doesn’t matter?

I have not, I bought it used last year it was in great condition still is. Always keeping up with maintenance and skiing as much as I can myself. 30 days into buying it the oil pressure sensor went and the dealer took care of it for me. Other then this sensor problem haven’t had any problems, she runs great

I had the same error code come up once on my 2012 GC Overland Summitt 3.6L about 1.5 years ago. I cleared the code and it hasn't returned. I believe it happened after I tried driving in Sport mode so I haven't used Sport mode since then.
