Program Overview Show If you are detail-oriented and love organizing and categorizing, consider a career as a medical coder. Being a medical billing and coding specialist involves taking medical procedures and the descriptions of injuries and diseases and converting them into numeric or alphanumeric codes. A medical facility or practice relies on accurate coding for timely payments and proper patient treatments, especially when different practitioners are involved. The Medical Billing and Coding physician-based program will prepare you for this vital role as a medical biller and medical coder in a physician’s office, hospital, or medical treatment facility — such as a surgery center or outpatient clinic. As well as learning to bill and code accurately, you will become familiar with health information technology and compliance standards. You will also learn anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology as they apply to medical billing and medical coding. After graduating from the program, you will be eligible to take a national certification exam for medical billing, medical coding, or both. Phoenix College’s Medical Billing and Coding: Physician-Based program offers courses spanning medical terminology for health care professionals, medical claims processing, and CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-CM diagnostic and medical coding. Students also get a chance to attend the physician-based billing and coding seminar for more in-depth instruction and discussion. PC offers a Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Medical Billing and Coding: Physician-Based. Graduates may go on to work at ambulatory care treatment centers, clinics, physician practices, managed care organizations, private billing services, and insurance companies.  Program Information SessionsIf you are looking for a career in health care, come to an information session about a degree or certificate in Health Information Management (HIM). Advances in healthcare technologies, a steadily growing aging population, and increased emphasis on outpatient care have resulted in a high demand for HIM professionals. Jobs for HIM professionals are available in traditional settings such as hospitals and clinics, government agencies, and educational institutes. Come and learn more about our certificate and degree programs. Instructional ModalitiesThe program provides theoretical and practical laboratory instruction in the classroom and professional practice experience in various health care environments. The HIM program at Phoenix College is entirely virtual. Health information management courses are offered in online, virtual meeting, and virtual hybrid format. Online courses are instructor-facilitated courses that do not require virtual meeting sessions. Virtual meeting courses are instructor-facilitated courses that require students to attend weekly virtual meetings on a specific day and time. Hybrid virtual meeting courses are instructor-facilitated courses that require students to attend virtual meetings on a bi-weekly or alternative meeting schedule on a specific day and time. All virtual sessions begin in the evening after 6 pm. However, professional practice experience (PPE) or externship hours must be completed during the day between the hours of 7 am-5 pm. PPE placement and schedules vary for each student. Students may have to complete their PPE at a local facility. HIM - Information SessionsIf you are looking for a career in health care, come to an information session about a degree or certificate in Health Information Management (HIM).
