It's been a long weekend at the top.

CIML girls' soccer contenders and ranked squads made their way to Burlington's annual multi-state showcase, the Adidas Tournament of Champions, and returned home to continue a stout set of mid-season challenges.

Third-ranked Dowling Catholic's reward for winning its regional bracket on Saturday night is a meeting with No. 2 Waukee on Tuesday.

"It's difficult, but we would rather have these games," said Dowling coach J.P. Pearson. "The state tournament isn't won in April or May. It's won in June, and if we're ready in June, we'll be hard to beat. Right now we're focused on the next game, and Waukee will give us a battle."

In Burlington, the Maroons (7-2) blanked Illinois-based Lemont and Belleville West before cruising past Pewaukee, Wis. on the way to Tuesday's showdown.

Waukee (6-3) went 1-2 against an all-Missouri slate and was the only traveling Iowa school to play on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

"We didn't get the results we wanted, but we hung in competitively, played well and walked away with some learning opportunities," said Waukee coach Tony Gabriel.

Imposing styles could be vital on short rest, and Waukee's balanced possession scheme will be tasked with slowing Dowling's pipeline to senior forwards Bailey Bravard and Sarah Kelly.

"We've worked on little details and playing a quicker pace, because I really think this is one of the fastest teams I've had," Pearson said. "Not just speed, but fast while we're moving the ball. If we can play that pace, I think it can be hard for teams to keep up."

The CIML supplied five of Iowa's eight tournament representatives, including Ankeny, Ankeny Centennial and Valley.

Little time remains to absorb what they've learned from three games in southeast Iowa.

Fourth-ranked Centennial (9-2) hosts No. 10 Valley (6-4) on Tuesday, then faces off with rival Ankeny (6-4) — ranked second in Class 2-A — on Friday night.

After playing tough out-of-state competition, the group has to again prove it can win locally.

"It's a good time to do this and see what these girls are made of," Gabriel said.

Valley at Centennial and Dowling at Waukee are currently scheduled for 7:30 p.m. kickoffs on Tuesday.
