Hey everyone, I was listening to Rain When I Die and looking at the lyrics in Spotify and was struck by wondering what if any the official meaning is. It looks like it’s Layne’s lyrics(? Could be Jerry but Down in a Hole was more his love song for the album if I’m not mistaken). Online it doesn’t look as though it’s been broken down by anyone who wrote it, so if anyone has any insight I’d love to hear about it. My two cents is that it’s Layne musing on the issues between him and Demri and their relationship. It doesn’t look to be specifically about addiction but maybe the whole one trying to get clean and then struggling while becoming frustrated has influence. Maybe splitting up with someone and wondering if they think about you, an agonized cry of someone who’s been cheated on wondering if their partner at least thought of them? It also seems like she wanted to return or mend things ‘she won’t let me hide/she don’t want me to cry’ but he doesn’t or can’t solve himself or figure out how to get to a place that works for both of them. A bit of rambling but in several Native American beliefs, rain when someone dies frees their spirits so maybe he’s saying he’ll only be freed from the guilt and shame of everything when he dies? I didn’t intend to make this so long but please share your thoughts I’d love to hear what you think this masterpiece means :) Alice in Chains
