History

Imagine driving out to the Cape, setting up your lounge chair on the beach, and settling down with a book, a beverage, and a bag of chips.  Of course, they would have to be Cape Cod Kettle Cooked Chips from right there in Hyannis, MA.  In 1980, two business owners decided to set up a store in town and sell chips.  From there, word spread, and now Cape Cod chips are sold nationwide.

While you are in town, definitely take a factory tour to find out how these delightful snacks are made.

Cape Cod has a great video on how their chips are made.  From raw potatoes being washed and sliced to the four-minute frying process.  They shake off the excess oil, add seasoning, and then package them for shipping.  Such a simple process.

Before big processing plants had chips rolling down the conveyor belts 24 hours a day, chips were made by dumping thinly sliced potatoes in a vat of hot oil.  This resulted in a different texture of chip – often thicker.  When manufacturers refer to batch processing, this is what they do in a simple way.  Technically, when you make chips at home, you are making kettle chips.
