2.0 out of 5 stars Many Pros and Cons, but the Cons are Major
By StarkContrast on July 2, 2019

This coffee table is good in many ways, but there's at least one major area where the manufacturer really dropped the ball.

First, I'll list the pros:
+ Sturdy
+ Tons of storage space
+ Looks great
+ Sliding mechanisms have held up well

This coffee table is in my office, so it is technically used daily, but the storage compartment isn't accessed daily. I originally saw this item at Wal-Mart, so I wasn't sure how the quality would be, but I was pleasantly surprised at first. It's not cheap-looking or flimsy feeling, the sliding mechanisms seem well-built, and it's actually fairly heavy.

Now for the cons:
- Terrible "veneer" quality
- Price is a too high for the quality

I definitely didn't expect this piece of furniture to be solid wood or anything; I expected it to be particle board with a veneer, and that's exactly what it is. However, I'm using the word "veneer" very loosely because the "veneer" on the outside of this coffee table is nothing like an actual veneer, or even a cheap low-quality veneer; it's literally paper printed to look like distressed wood, and it's not thick paper, nor is it paper covered with any kind of protective coating at all. The "distressed wood" all over the outside of this coffee table is like extremely cheap wallpaper. I uploaded the only photo I could find on my phone where you can see what I mean.

To be honest, this was probably okay for the sides and bottom of the coffee table, because the sides and bottom of a table don't typically get much (if any) wear, but using this cheap paper on the top of the coffee table was a terrible decision! The paper on top starts peeling up within a few weeks, or sooner if you happen to drop something on it or slide something across the top (like a pencil, or a fork, etc). Once the top is peeled, you'll be left with nothing but low-grade particle board underneath it (looks like cardboard).

I'm really sad about this because this coffee table is extremely useful, has a few good qualities that I didn't expect, and looks beautiful (for the first few days/weeks).

Lastly, I sent messages to the seller of this item here on Amazon to explain the problem and inquire about how I could contact the manufacturer to get replacement parts, and they never replied. I know they didn't manufacture it, but I typically expect good customer service from Amazon sellers and was disappointed that they never even took the time to reply to me.

TL/DR Bottom Line: If the manufacturer would change the veneer ONLY on the top to something thicker, more durable, or even just coat the edges of the paper with better glue or more glue, it'd probably last at least a couple of years, which would definitely justify the price point. As it is, I'd only be willing to pay $75 to $99 for it. For $175, you'll be able to find much better quality furniture at Target, TJ Maxx Homegoods, Dirt Cheap, and/or the floor model/clearance section of your local furniture stores.
