    Congratulations!

It's very, very difficult to lock your keys in the car. The car makes it nearly impossible to do it accidentally, so there must be more to your tale of woe. Maybe a detail such as ignored a low key fob battery warning message for days/weeks, then the battery died, etc.

I was going to say, if the key fob is in the car, depending on the year of his/her car, shouldn't you be able to grab the drivers door handle to open it? Sorry to hear about this. No fun indeed. I don't have an answer.

U can keep the fob inside, roll a window down, reach in to power down, relock the already closed door & roll up the window. This will get ur key locked inside. Don't worry......I've never locked my key inside but I know this route will work

My suggestion Is to get ur 2nd fob. If this is not an option then a call to AAA is in need

How do you roll down/up a window from outside the car? I would only be able to do this from inside the car.

Anyway, this is why we replaced our 2nd FOB immediately when DH lost it (about $200). I did not want to get into a situation like this.

  10. Without a locksmith, the old, coathanger method is about the only way.
Make a hook shape and catch the window button or lock button.

I bought a lockout kit just for these situations.
Basically is some semi-ridgid coated metal rods and plastic wedges.

For the future, would be worth buying a metal key

    Easy:

Keep Prii on & fob on dash
    Roll window down
    Get out & close door
Reach in, power dwn & lock doors
Now while reaching in, close window.......Tada......u just lock ur fob inside.

I find that just having my key fob in my left pants pocket versus my right can rarely trigger “key not detected” warning light. But just shifting around in the seat and it will go away.

On another note, since it was spelled out “how” to lock my key in the car, I must do this myself. I’ll just make sure I have the mechanical key in my pocket when I do it.

a little late to the game, but for folks who may currently have this problem, here are two ideas:

Lishi hard-lock decoder (verify the correct one for your model):

Can you lock your keys in your car with keyless entry?

Smart proximity key fobs (or a key card in some cases, as with Tesla) will, in most situations, not let you lock the “key” in the car. And many brands now have apps that let your phone be the fob. They won't, however, save you from running out of battery or losing the fob on your way back to the locked car.

Can you leave a key fob in your car?

A: Leaving the device in the car, or even within the proximity communication range, may be detrimental. Quite often, the transmitter and receiver continue to communicate. This may keep the vehicle's controller area network bus and modules awake. That can kill the car's battery.
