Ashwagandha and Tongkat Ali are two of our most popular herbal supplements here at Lost Empire Herbs and two very important hormone-supporting herbs!

Before we go further, I need you to understand that half of what I’m talking about here applies to any Ashwagandha or Tongkat Ali out there on the market, and probably about half of it applies just to the products we sell here at Lost Empire Herbs.

(We recently released this information in video form so you can watch it in the video or read below. Also, note that you can find these products for sale near the bottom of this page.)

Hormonal Benefits of Tongkat Ali and Ashwagandha

Both of these are good at supporting the hormones, but the word hormone is a generalization. There are hundreds of different hormones in the human body

So which hormones are we talking about?

Tongkat Ali Sex Hormone Benefits

Tongkat Ali is really strong in the sex hormone department. So for guys, that’s testosterone. For women, you’re looking at progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and really both men and women have all of these hormones and there’s a whole bunch of other ones at play as well; a lot of different herbs there as well as different forms of estrogen.

Tongkat Ali is really helpful for supporting the body’s own supply of testosterone, kind of up-regulating things to help increase your body’s own production of it. And not only making more of it but keeping it freely available as well.

Additionally, some of the scientific data is showing that it may help to limit sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in your blood, and limit aromatization, which is the conversion of testosterone into estrogen – a process that we want to regulate naturally.

Tongkat Ali is really helping in the sex hormone department like this. And of course along with that, helping you to have healthy sexual function.

And that is why Tongkat Ali is one of our most popular herbs.

Ashwagandha’s Anti-Stress Benefits

Jeff with a harvested, fully grown Ashwagandha plant.

Ashwagandha works across multiple hormonal systems.

It does seem to help in the sex hormone department to some degree. Some of the research out there shows that it helps support an increase in testosterone, even in healthy volunteers.

But really where Ashwagandha shines is helping with stress. It really helps people to be able to handle stress better.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb, but it seems to work kind of differently than many of the other adaptogen herbs.

While many of the adaptogens such as Rhodiola rosea can be stimulating, in fact too stimulating for some people, Ashwagandha is more of a relaxing adaptogen. The adaptogens will help with that, but they can also just free up energy so that you can push yourself even further.

Ashwagandha, in contrast, seems to really help allow the body to relax more so that as Jeff, the farmer that grows the ashwagandha for our tincture likes to say “relax into strength”.

Ashwagandha seems to really help with lowering cortisol, the chief stress hormone in the body, and by lowering cortisol we’ll often see testosterone levels goes up.

So they have different mechanisms by which they may help increase testosterone. But once again, that’s just some of what Ashwagandha does.

Many people find it helps them to have deep restorative sleep. And of course, this could lower cortisol. This could allow a lot of hormonal action in the body to help regulate itself much better.

Ashwagandha even seems to be helping with the thyroid hormone system, especially a hypothyroid, people having issues with that Ashwagandha seems to help. So Ashwagandha is more of a systemic function across the whole human body. It may be a great one to be on long-term, and very few people seem to have any sort of negative reactions to taking it.

Tongkat Ali, especially our 100:1 extract, is a bit more potent. It’s not appropriate for everyone, and women can use it usually at a smaller dose. It’s going to work well at that. But even then it may be too powerful. Even me personally, I’ve experimented with Tongkat many times before, but I don’t find it’s one I want to take actively. It results in a strong hormonal action and so isn’t for everyone.

But I do take Ashwagandha regularly. I feel that it’s more of a yin-supporting herb while having that yang-ness to it as well. So it’s a really great herb.

A couple of other details are that we have Tongkat Ali in a powdered version as well as the capsules. It tastes extremely bitter and potent. The taste of it is stronger than many people can handle. So we do have the capsules, although I do like people to enjoy the taste of the herbs.

Our Ashwagandha is in a tincture. That’s one other reason I like to take this and do often tinctures; super easy to travel with, super convenient to just squirt in your mouth anytime you want to take it.

Our Ashwagandha comes from the Portland, Oregon area. It’s some the only Ashwagandha farmed commercially in the US. It’s biodynamically prepared and spagyrically prepared. So this is an Ashwagandha tincture I’d put up against anything else there on the market.

As a price comparison, our Tongkat Ali, whether powder capsules is $39.99 and Ashwagandha is $34.99, so close in price.

I would say experiment with both. Finding what works for you ultimately only what works for you is going to be the answer for what is better for what you’re going for, your body, all your needs and all that.

Can I take ashwagandha and tongkat ali?

Is Tongkat Ali and Ashwagandha perfect together? From my experience, these supplements work perfectly together. They balance each other out and complement each other at the same time. First of all, they both have a positive influence on testosterone.

What supplements should not be taken with ashwagandha?

They could interact with sedatives, blood thinners, thyroid supplements, drugs that suppress the immune system, and drugs for anxiety, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Ashwagandha might also interact with supplements that cause sleepiness, like St. John's wort, kava, valerian, and others.

How long does it take for tongkat ali to increase testosterone?

Results showed that supplementation significantly increased testosterone levels by 15% and free testosterone levels by 34% among subjects taking tongkat ali for two weeks, compared to placebo.

What's the difference between ashwagandha and tongkat ali?

Overall, tongat ali is better if you wish to increase testosterone, boost libido, and improve athletic performance. Ashwagandha will give you a slightly smaller boost in these areas, but it is better for stress and anxiety reduction. There are no studies examining the effects of these two herbs together.
