Can you cut the liner out of lululemon shorts

  • 15 years ago 02/21/2007 5:08pm EST

So, after having gone through many a pair of lined shorts, and ultimately ending up cutting out every one of the liners, I still haven't figured out what the point is! I've heard that guys like to run sans undies and just let the liner provide the support, but that still doesn't explain why they put 'em in girls' shorts. Even though I wear underwear under the liner, they get so smelly that after a few wears, even detergent can't get the smell out! (I know it's gross, but what other board could I say that on?) And after 15 or so washes, the elastic under the legs starts to chafe like crazy. I took off a pair of the Nike tempo track shorts (which, besides the liner, are wonderful) after a summer half marathon and the sides of the liner were soaked with blood from the chaffing! So, do I just have crazy sensitive skin, or does anyone else have the problem with the chaffing? Are there any women out there who actually *like* the liners? And why is it so difficult to find a pair of good shorts that don't come pre-packaged with this nonsensical accessory? Hmph. *end of rant…for now*

it's so that when you shit your pants it doesnt all just run down your legs.

get some bodyglide or something to help with the chaffing

as for running (split) shorts with no liner...can't help ya there. you could always switch to those fitted 'boy shorts' to help cut down on friction.

i never wear underwear with mine, and i don't have chafing issues with the liners...that said, i am VERY particular about the type of liners in my shorts. i only buy shorts with the really soft microfiber liners.

The point is that if they make all shorts with liners, they don't have to make two types. Fewer varieties --> lower manufacturing costs.

  • 15 years ago 02/21/2007 6:16pm EST

I'm not gonna tell you which shorts to wear or explain why they make 'em like they make 'em. But if you want all the odor out of your synthetic running clothes, don't use your regular detergent, use one called Sport Wash. It works great.

And I'm a dude, but I do sometimes get leg chafing from the liner. One poster mentioned Body Glide, which works but gets expensive. Cheaper and also effective for leg chafing: a dab of olive oil.

hehe, Vagisil work as a nice chafe-prevention? ;-) Believe me though, after catching a whiff of my fiance's shorts after a workout, guys smell even worse! I'll have to give laundry answerman's detergent a try....at least address half the problem!

It's the underwear that actually gives me the chaffing. I wear shorts with a liner & freeball it. Much more comfortable. They only stink if you run multiple times in them without washing. Just wash them more often.

Wait-- so you're wearing underwear along with the liner?! The liner is there so you don't have to wear underwear! Obviously you're going to be hotter and sweatier down there if you wear underwear along with the liner, which would cause friction. The liner fits loosely and is 'airy', so if you don't wear underwear you'll stay dry and have less/no friction.

I think the problem is not the liner but the fact that you wear underwear 'with' the liner.

I've also heard that a pre-soak in vinegar will kill the bacteria that cause the odor (haven't tried).

Ahah! You may be on to something...

  • 15 years ago 02/22/2007 4:25pm EST

You know, this is a basic microbiology concept. Bacteria thrives in a warm, moist, dark environment. I promise you if you cut out wearing underwear, you are going to create a less conducive environment for bacterial growth (and the smell that goes along with it). The liner is there to prevent any chafing, while also allowing for a dry environment. You will be more comfortable too.

Do you guys really run without underwear?

Those liners are not supportive enough for me.

I still don't understand why they don't make them more snug, most of the time they are so loose my ass hangs out. Are they making them for big fat men or runners...?

I have taken to wearing those man bikini briefs under my shorts.

I'm a woman, so can't help 'ya there.

I think i'd feel a little naughty running without undies....would you call that, pulling a Britney? Bet the breeze is nice though! LOL

  • 15 years ago 02/22/2007 5:29pm EST

    be naughty, chafe less.

seriously, unless it's "that time" and i just feel more comfortable with undies, i definitely go without. i always figured that's why they put the liners in the shorts to begin with.

  • 15 years ago 02/22/2007 5:46pm EST

Haha, ok, so my plan is to work some mad overtime and save up the mulah to buy enough shorts so that I can run panty-free in the spring time and not have to wear a pair twice without washing (because that's too gross, even for me!) I'm really looking forward to this now....especially on the hotter days :-D

  • 15 years ago 02/22/2007 6:13pm EST

Mad overtime? You don't really need super-expensive running shorts. Well, I dunno about you specifically, but I and most of us don't. Buy cheaper brands, buy at clearance sales, buy at Marshalls or TJ Maxx or Sierra Trading Post, whatever. But don't pay like $30 for a pair of damn shorts!

  • 15 years ago 02/22/2007 7:53pm EST

Ope, forgot you cut out the liners. I don't know how breezy your shorts are-- are they splits? If they are NOT splits, you'd be ok. If they're splits, well...:D I have several pairs of Soffe nylom shorts that are notched ($7/pair, like the chearleaders wear)-- they are unlined and I have no problems with going commando. If none of your shorts have liners, you should find some cheapo lined/unlined shorts for daily runs (try Eastbay brand or Target or the Soffe shorts I mentioned) and then find nicer ones for race day.

Why is there a liner in running shorts?

While men's and women's running shorts feature designs with liners, not all styles have them. Running shorts with liners have their benefits, though. They provide support and moisture management that allow you to forgo wearing underwear. There are also running shorts without liners, if you find them uncomfortable.
