Delta 22-650 planer for sale

  1. Older planer, what's it worth?

I'm fairly new to woodworking and have had access to my grandpa's shop, but would like to start buying more of my own tools. I just saw this. It is a Delta 22-650, built in '85. http://blacksburg.craigslist.org/tls/5093897185.html Any comments about the planer and what it's worth?

    Thank You!

  3. If it's all in decent shape I'd say that's a steal. I haven't used one of these planers but just from looking at it, it looks a lot beefier than your average lunchbox planer.

  4. If it runs I'd buy it. Good price and going to be a LOT quieter than a lunch box. Try to get or find a manual, it likely has a gear box that you change the oil in occasionally. See if it comes with the knife setting gauge which is a plus but at that price I'd get it anyway if I needed a planer. Not likely to be around long.

  5. Definitely a few hundred below typical good asking prices, esp if it comes with that wheeled stand.

Just be aware that it's a PITA to change blades on that machine. (As with most planers that have a top-mounted motor, but especially with that model, according to my friend who owns one. It's compounded by the fact the knives don't use jack screws but rather springs.) Buy that jig he has !!! (Better yet, get him to include it for free.)

I would snag it, and then think hard about getting a Byrd head for it. The head will cost a lot more than the planer, ($900 from Holbren) but beside low noise and great cut quality, you won't have to change blades any longer. Take the $150 he wants for the jig and put it towards the Byrd, and be a happy camper for the rest of your life.

  6. I have the 15" version of that planer, works well, it's a solid design, if that one works that's a very reasonable price. I disagree with Allan on knife changes, not really a problem, there is a bolt you losen and the motor pivots mostly out of the way, no worse than many other machines, mine came with a knife setting jig that worked well enough, planer pals magnetic jigs work better but I'm a cheepo and never bought them. I did wind up installing a Byrd head in mine but could do a knife change in under 15 minutes once I figured it out, which is way quicker than doing a knife change on the Byrd head.

  7. If it's one of the Brazil-made Invicta ones, I'd grab it. $350 is a decent price for that.

  8. Thanks everyone for your quick answers. I just came back with it on my truck. It's in great shape, and purrs nicely. Yes it is a Delta invicta, made in brazil, 1985 model.

    Thanks again.
