What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. Depo-Medrol is a corticosteroid drug administered by a doctor for treating a variety of inflammatory conditions and diseases to keep you as comfortable as possible as the symptoms are decreased. These include ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, allergic reactions, skin/eyes/blood diseases, arthritis, and primary or secondary
adrenocortical insufficiency. The Depo-Medrol injection may be given into a muscle (intramuscular), into a joint (intra-articular), or directly into the lesion or into the skin below the lesion (intralesional). The active ingredient in Depo-Medrol is a corticosteroid called Methylprednisolone. Once your doctor injects Depo-Medrol into a muscle, joint, soft tissue, or lesion, the corticosteroid will act to
stop the production of certain chemicals that cause inflammation as an immune response to a threat or injury. To do this, Methylprednisolone will cause proteins to block the chemical that plays a role in your inflammatory response so your inflammation is decreased as your immune system becomes suppressed. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that involves your own immune system attacking the
cartilage and joint lining in your fingers, wrists, knees, or elbows. This can make grasping, bending, reaching, and walking painful as you lose the cushioning effect that allows smooth movements when you use the affected joints. Therapy with injections of Depo-Medrol can reduce the inflammation and provide you comfort while performing daily tasks without pain and swelling. Ask your doctor if Depo-Medrol is safe to use
if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or are breast feeding. Your doctor should know about other medical conditions or allergies you have and list all OTC and Rx medications you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. This will help to determine if Depo-Medrol injections are the right treatment for your situation. Long-term use of corticosteroids may be a necessary part
of your life when experiencing an unforgiving disease such as arthritis, but with a suppressed immune system you can be at the mercy of other infections or diseases. It can also cause your own adrenal glands to cut back on the production of your own corticosteroid called cortisol. If you suddenly stop Depo-Medrol injections, you may have to give the adrenal glands time to regain full function to start producing cortisol as it should. DEPO-MEDROL (METHYLPREDNISOLONE)
