How much do I pay for my CONTOUR® NEXT Meter and Test Strips?

Test strips are covered when medically necessary and prescribed by your physician. Medicare will reimburse either 80% of the Medicare Fee Schedule or the actual charges, whichever is less.

  • This means that once your annual Medicare "Part B" deductible is paid, you pay the other 20%. If you have supplemental or secondary insurance, you may pay even less than the 20%.
  • Many pharmacies, mail order and medical equipment suppliers will take care of all the Medicare paperwork and billing submissions for you.
  • Ask your pharmacist if this service is offered before you buy your CONTOUR® NEXT test strips.
  • A doctor's prescription is required for Medicare coverage and patients must meet Medicare eligibility coverage criteria.*

What do I need in order to obtain Medicare reimbursement for CONTOUR® NEXT Test Strips?

  • Your doctor must give you a prescription in order to obtain Medicare reimbursement.
  • Remember to ask your doctor to specify "Do Not Substitute" on the prescription to ensure that you receive the CONTOUR® NEXT brand.
  • Then, you can take your prescription to your local pharmacy, hospital or clinic pharmacy, medical equipment supplier, or Medicare mail order contract supplier.
  • You may want to call your chosen supplier to ensure that they sell CONTOUR® NEXT test strips and that they will assist you in filing your claim.

†10% applies to glucose levels ≥100 mg/dL. In multiple clinical trials examined by Bernstein et al., the CONTOUR®NEXT meter portfolio delivered at least 95% of results within 10% of the laboratory reference value for blood glucose concentrations ≥100 mg/dL and within ±10 mg/dL of the laboratory reference value for blood glucose concentrations <100 mg/dL.

‡ ±8.4% applies to values ≥100mg/dL. An ad hoc analysis demonstrated 95% of results fell within ±8.4 mg/dL or ±8.4% of the laboratory reference values for glucose concentrations <100 mg/dL or ≥100 mg/dL, respectively, when tested via subject-obtained capillary fingertip results (patients with diabetes).

Are test strips covered under Part B?

Part B covers home blood sugar (glucose) monitors and supplies you use with the equipment, including blood sugar test strips, lancet devices, and lancets. There may be limits on how much or how often you get these supplies.

How many test strips does Medicare cover per month?

However, the amount of supplies that Part B covers varies. If you use insulin, you may be able to get up to 300 test strips and 300 lancets every 3 months. If you don't use insulin, you may be able to get 100 test strips and 100 lancets every 3 months.

Does Medicare Part B pay for diabetic supplies?

Medicare Part B covers blood sugar monitors, blood sugar test strips, lancet devices, lancets, and glucose control solutions for beneficiaries with diabetes, whether or not they use insulin, but the amount covered varies.

How often will Medicare pay for test strips?

You need a new prescription from your doctor for lancets and test strips every 12 months, so don't forget to ask for refills for your supplies every year.
