Easiest language for english speakers to learn reddit

I lived in South Korea for over a year and never mastered the language. Hell, never got proficient, mostly just survival and day to day life needs. Grammar is often not taught formally, at least it wasn't in our classes.

Hangeul is very easy to learn, it's fairly consistent between written and pronounced. There are only a few phonemes that aren't in English and they're easy to learn, aspirated consonants are the only tricky part.

I think you could make the case that Norwegian is one of the easiest languages for an English speaker to learn. It's a Germanic language so it's in the same family as English, the words are often similar so you can make out what the sentence is about without knowing all the prepositions or whatnot. The word order in a sentence is also often identical as in English. There are of course drawbacks like Norway having two official written languages and its dialects can be a nightmare for foreigners I imagine. Also, the language is totally useless outside of Norway except for perhaps to be able to understand written Danish but nobody is interested to know what those people have to say anyways

but nobody is interested to know what those people have to say anyways

Shots fired!

Norway having two official written languages

how does that work?

level 2

I was gonna say Norwegian but only because i am Norwegian. Also Denmark is the worst part of Norway

level 2

LPT: To get around the two writen languages, just lear Swedish instead!

level 1

other West Germanic languages like Dutch, German and Frisian

level 2

German grammar is fucked up though. Hell, I speak German fluently and I still get it wrong.

level 2

No one should learn Frisian ever.

That is all.

German is stupid complicated. You end up making exceptions to grammatical rules more often than actually following them. So yeah, a lot like English :^)

level 2

Also add in that if you're in the USA you've probably been hearing Spanish thrown around your entire life and are used to how it sounds. Likely you've even learned a few phrases that aren't difficult to reverse engineer when you sit down and start learning the innards of the language.

level 2

And phonetics are "easy" maybe the hard r is the most complicated. Also Reading it is easy, you never Wonder how something is pronounced, unlike English well I have to Google it up to be sure.

level 2

Yep, learning Spanish and can confirm. You can basically freestyle yourself through half of it and the rest isn't hard eigher. The grammar is fairly straightforward too.

German. English is a bitch to learn , by comparison. And much of English is based in Germanic languages, so that will make it easier to learn.

Pronunciation rules are solid, in German. They follow the fucking RULES !

level 2

German hasn't got hard words, but the grammatica is really hard. All the cases and declension.

The US Foreign Service Institute says that Germanic languages (apart from German) and Romance languages are easiest. Those include Dutch, Afrikaans, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian.

I went from 0 to fluent in German and it took 4 years. It was surprisingly easy for me, a native English speaker. I had tried and failed to learn Spanish and French in the past, however German came easily. It is because English is a direct decendant of German, whereas French and Spanish are "Romantic" languages. German grammar is reversed to the English speaker but much of our vocabulary is essentially German and rooted in German.

As a result of learning the language, I also found that I got a bonus understanding of Yiddish, Dutch, and to a lesser degree, Swedish..can't really speak or write them, but I can get at least a basic understanding of what is being said.
