However, despite the large cabin, the Edge has some drawbacks. The overall driver experience lags a bit behind the Mazda CX-5, and the interior isn't as nicely appointed. Some of the high-tech features are a bit finicky to use. Read on to learn more about the feature differences between the 2019 Mazda CX-5 and Edge models. Driver ExperienceThe 2019 Mazda CX-5 base trims are powered by a 2.5L, four-cylinder engine rated at 187 horsepower. That doesn't sound like much, but this is a relatively lightweight vehicle, and acceleration is more than adequate. The engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard. The Grand Touring and Signature trims come with a turbocharged version of the same engine, with a total power output of 227 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard on these trims. The steering is weighted a bit on the heavy side, and steering control is well above the average. Handling is superb, with the vehicle navigating tight turns without roll or tire squeal. The 2019 Ford Edge is larger and heavier than the Mazda CX-5 and therefore comes with more powerful engines. The larger of the two delivers 335 horsepower and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All of this power doesn't translate to handling or steering prowess, however. The ride is a bit firm, and the vehicle doesn't take to twisty roads the way the Mazda CX-5 does. Interior LuxuriesThis is what really sets the Mazda CX-5 apart from the Edge. The Mazda CX-5's interior is plush and luxurious in appearance. There are plenty of high-tech goodies in the rear seating area including additional USB ports and multiple rear-located stereo speakers. Standard on all trims are such niceties as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, rear climate vents, and split-reclining rear seats. The uplevel trims add on full leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, driver seat memory function, and heated front seats. The narrow roof pillars make for excellent outward visibility. The 2019 Ford Edge has a comfortable interior, but the upholstery and seating materials look a bit dated. The design trims are far from luxurious, and many buyers will be put off by the lack of cubbies and storage pockets despite the Edge's big overall cargo area. High-Tech FeaturesStandard on all 2019 Mazda CX-5 trims are Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, push-button ignition, a 7-inch screen display, and a very nice sound system. The uplevel trims add on an upgraded driver information display, navigation, and satellite radio. The Grand Touring trim also comes with a head-up display. Standard safety features include forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring, and all trims can be ordered with the full Sport i-Activsense safety package. The 2019 Ford Edge base trim comes with Bluetooth and voice controls, but the central display screen is disappointingly small. An uplevel trim must be chosen in order to get additional USB ports, and the Ford Sync 3 system isn't available on the base model. The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is a rather small entry into the mid-size, two-row crossover class, but it's nonetheless roomy and offers a great driving experience. And it's been improved for 2022, with the mildest of facelifts. Sadly, there isn't a plug-in or electric version in sight. But despite that, it's good to own, comes with a long list of standard equipment and represents a good value alternative to more mainstream rivals.
