This movie, as the title suggests, is a take on the Brother's Grimm fairy tale of Hanel and Gretel. After escaping the witch, the two grew up to become witch hunters (really any kind of demon) exacting revenge on any witches they come across. The movie stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Atherton as the brother and sister duo who take out the bad guys with shotguns and crossbows (while still being set in rustic woodland villages). The movie does not take itself too seriously and really does not expect the viewers to do so either. It is definitely a gory shoot-em-up action movie that has a lot of over-the-top violence. There is not much sexual content aside from one scene in which you kind of get a glimpse of part of Gemma Arterton's breast. It is a mix of action, horror, and comedy. The movie has a strong supporting cast made of up of both known and relatively unknown actors including Famke Janssen as Muriel, an evil grand witch who rules over a coven of dark witches, Peter Stormare as Sheriff Berringer, Thomas Mann, Derek Mears, and Pihla Viitala.

The movie looks and sounds great on Blu-Ray. The extras are somewhat sparse, however. These include a 15-minute making-of documentary, a 10-minute feature on how the witch story was adapted from the fairy tale to the movie, and a 5-minute feature on Edward the troll.

Overall, the movie is good if you take it for what it is. If you are expecting an award winner, you will be sorely disappointed. If you are expecting an action movie that mixes in some humor and knows the whole premise of the movie is absurd, you will probably enjoy it. It is very violent and gory (especially in the unrated version) and there is a lot of swearing, so if that turns you off to a movie, then do not even bother. If however, you are looking for a fun action movie with great visuals and a lot of good special effects, this is a good one to check out.

I love how Hansel and Gretel was brought to the adult audience. I love the actor and actress that played Hansel and Gretel.

This thing needs a sequel, even if they use diff. actors for it. Let's see the Hansel character get some powers this time, though!

and I enjoyed on location shoot in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, the Saxony rock formations, and the final scene in the old palace square of Henry the Lion's town of Braunschweig/Brunswick, whose medieval city the English destroyed 90% of in 1943.

I'll say it again: Buffy has much to answer for. Because of that show every supernatural beastie now seems to throw down with the kung fu. HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS gleefully subscribes to this trend. But at least it's a movie that's very much self-aware and tongue-in-cheek. It's the best thing about it, its irreverent approach.

"We learned a couple of things while trapped in that house," remarks Hansel's voiceover narration. There's an early scene that details young Hansel and Gretel's terrifying sojourn at the witch's candy house and how they survived that. 15 years later and a years-spanning montage later, we reconnect with the now adult siblings. In this reimagined medieval Germanic setting, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) are become this infamous pair of wisecracking, f-bomb dropping bounty hunters. They're what passes as the Middle Ages' version of rock stars. Rock stars armed with holy water and heavy artillery.

This hamlet's mayor has contracted Hansel and Gretel to track down the local witch what's been abducting children, much to the chagrin of the territorial sheriff (Peter Stormare). Expect this a-h01e peacekeeper to undermine our heroes at every opportunity while leading his own witch hunt.

We learn the importance of the impending eclipse of the moon (or "blood moon" if you're feeling poetic), of how it ushers in dark possibilities that surface only once in a generation. The nasty witch Muriel (Famke Janssen) means to further the witches' cause. It may require a sacrifice or two at the witch's sabbath, like the life of a good grand witch. And this is probably a SPOILER, but did you know that Gretel's mom is good grand witch? Can you follow the road map?

So this movie wanders far away from its fairy tale source material. Doesn't make it bad. HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS is one of them guilty pleasures that I don't think I should feel guilty about. It's another genre stew that retrofits historical figures or classic fairy tales. Norwegian writer/director Tommy Wirkola messes about with anachronism as if it's the newest coolest thing. Modern-day speak. Gatling guns. Medieval defibrilators. Hansel's having to periodically inject himself because of his diabetes. The banter amused me, such as Gretel about to administer a smackdown on one evil witch but first politely informing her: "I hate to break it to you, but it's not going to be an open casket." Heh. So, yeah, unlike VAN HELSING or LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, this movie owns a wicked sense of humor about itself. It's got more in common with ARMY OF DARKNESS with its tongue-in-cheek sensibilities. The cast is a lot of fun to watch, namely our two leads and also Thomas Mann, who plays an eager lad what's been tracking the careers of and collecting fan boy material on Hansel and Gretel. Famke Janssen has fun being over-the-top. Stormare has fun being petty and despicable. And the whoever is playing Edward, the troll with the emo eyes, is pretty damn boss.

So it's loud. It's vulgar. It's violent and super-bloody and awfully gory. It's vaguely steampunk. Our two leads wear their leather pants with pride and with swagger. Yeah, son, it speaks to my inner juvie. The action is wildly outrageous, with an inventive assortment of witches, all of whom come off as formidable and wily and seemingly down with kung-fu. But Hansel and Gretel will match up their kickass arsenal of witch-killing weapons (cough***friggin'gatlinggun***) against them vile crones every time. With a running time of an hour and a half, this sucker doesn't wear out its welcome. And, again, it so unabashedly embraces its attitude and humor and its use of anachronism that it's got a great shot of winning you over.

This one flew under my radar till now. It's a Van Helsing type movie with the action turned WAY up.
The story. Well it doesn't matter. Wanna see some witches go down? Wanna see a gatling gun get blessed and blow witches up? The CGI is pretty damn good. The locations are good. The plot. Well there is one. The action. YEP. TONS OF IT. I think it's well worth your time to watch and I could see watching this one again every few years. It didn't do so well in the US but worldwide it blew up and ended up making 220+ million on a 50 million budget. I'd say it earned every penny of that 220 mil. It was a turn your brain off fun movie to watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Post-Gothic Steampunk Movie this Century

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 29, 2021

You might see the title of this and think this one's not for me - you would be so wrong!

This is the best post-gothic steampunk troll-affirming movie you are ever likely to see this century. The set designs, costumes and make-up are perfect. The last thirty minutes make up an action scene that will leave you breathless. The scenery, by the way, has a magic all of its own

The script is spot on - doesn't take itself too seriously but never crosses the line into parody. Most of all, the movie has Gemma Arterton in leather (yes, I know - eyes popping on stalks) and Famke Jansson is the sexiest bad-ass cannibalistic evil witch you are ever likely to want to meet.

Amazingly, even though the movie was a box office smash, there was no follow-up - that's really sad because there were plenty of other interesting witches in the climactic scene who deserve to have their stories told - there are rumours of a TV series, - great idea, Amazon where are you?

5.0 out of 5 stars They sure are ugly witches!

Hope I spelt that correctly! This 2013 action-horror neo-noir comedy is a sequel to the fairy tale in which Hansel [Jeremy Renner] and Gretel [Gemma Arterton] are now adults embarked on a career as witch hunters. The movie opens with a reworking of the basic tale and then skips forward ‘many years’ as the duo are hired to investigate the disappearance of a number of children, bringing them into conflict with the local sheriff and witches alike.
The opening credits a reminiscent of ‘Lemony Snikett’ anf the fast driving music is likewise quirky. Instantly we know this is special. The entire story has been given that steam-punked edge with sleek costumes and snazzy weaponry. The special effects and make up are first class with good acting from all and a clear picture quality.
The single disc opens to language selection of English or Netherlands, selection takes you to main screen offering play, set up [basically subtitles or audio description], special features [a single making of documentery] and scene selection. Rated at 15 it has everything, nudity, gratuitous swearing, bloody gory deaths, burnings and head crushings and in many respects outdoes a lot of ‘dedicated horror’ movies, so this is definitely not one for the kiddies. If you like action with a comic twist -although the plot twists do seem rather obvious, and like the recent trend for giving everything a Victoriana steampunked edge, you’ll probably love this, but if you want the traditional fairytale approach look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Payback's a witch

Although they've been watered down over the years, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm actually started out as quite dark and gruesome pieces of work. Hansel and Gretel, after all, involves two children turning the tables on a nasty old lady by burning her alive in her oven.

What happens next in the story may nowadays be considered suitable for kids. What happens next in this film version of it most definitely isn't.

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters starts with the familiar opening. Then fast forwards to years later and shows us the siblings all grown up. And getting their own back on witches by having become bounty hunters who specialise in dealing with them.

Both have a tough no nonsense attitude. A reputation that precedes them. Weaponry that doesn't quite fit the time period. And American accents.

But when hired to deal with a witch who has taken children from a small town, they find there's a bit more to this job than meets the eye...

Horror meets Steampunk [something set centuries back involving fantastical technology in the style of the time. Like something written by Jules Vern] in a twisted take on the original tale. This tries to mix genres and succeeds at doing that pretty well. Horror fans will not be disappointed with the downright nasty witches. And the gory moments. The period setting and the more modern pop culture parodies - such as the duo having an admirer and being the subject of newspaper reports - go together quite well. All the steampunk stuff is pretty inspired also.

The two leads are pretty good. Jeremy Renner's character does remain stoic throughout but he does a good job of making him a tough action hero. Gemma Arterton does a decent American accent, and gets some good character development also.

It's an odd film directing wise though, as it's rather choppily edited. And you do wonder if it's been assembled from a far longer cut. It does tend to jump between scenes somewhat abruptly, with characters getting from place to place quickly and with no explanation.

So whilst it doesn't quite work all the time, when it does, it's pretty good. At being what it sets out to be. A fun twisted horror romp. If that's the kind of thing you're looking for, then this will more than suffice. And provides some pretty decent escapism.

The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:

Languages: English.

Subtitles: English, Dutch.

There are no trailers on the disc and it will go straight into the menu once you load it up.

The only extra is an eight minute long featurette which primarily looks at how the witches and some of the set pieces in the film were created. As with most featurettes on dvds these days, it's short but quite decent viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly better than I expected

I'm a big fan of writer/director Tommy Wirkola's Nazi Zombies movie "Dead Snow" which managed to be a good gory zombie film that was also pretty funny. H&G is a kind of gory fantasy/fairy tale steampunk movie with lots of swearing and humour. And it's a lot better than the reviews would indicate.

Sure, this is a silly action/horror popcorn movie but it's a very well-made silly...etc. The cast is perhaps classier than it deserves with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton on great form as the two leads who completely convince as action heroes with a sense of humour and Arterton is very sexy in a refined classy way. Famke Janssen and Peter Stormare are also pretty good as the two villains. Kudos to to Edward the Troll, a great creation who wasn't, as I first thought, cgi. To be honest, the swearing would have been more effective if there'd been less of it as the swearing becomes wearing after a while but that's the worst I can say.

Accept this film on the level it's aiming for and you'll have a lot of fun.
