  1. Start with the simple syrup. You can prepare the simple syrup ahead of time and use it as needed. Add to your tastes.
  2. Brew the tea. Use your favourite chai tea blend and hot water. Let it steep so it’s nice and strong.
  3. Froth the milk. Use a milk frother if you have one (on the cold setting), use a hand held frother, or just shake the milk really well in a mason jar.
  4. Don’t forget the ice. Pour everything over ice, and enjoy!

What kitchen equipment do I need to make an iced chai latte?

A pot or teapot for making the tea is helpful, along with some reusable tea papers (if you’re using loose-leaf chai tea), and you can use a mason jar to foam the milk.

Can I make a decaffeinated iced chai latte?

Yes! Simply use your favourite decaf chai tea blend (available at large grocery stores, or online).

Where can I find Chai tea?

Most grocery stores carry a conventional chai tea blend. Most traditional chai teas are imported loose-leaf (not tea bags).

Can I make a dairy-free iced latte?

Yes! Feel free to use your favourite barista blend almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, etc.

Can I make a sugar-free iced latte?

Yes! Feel free to leave out the syrup, or use maple syrup, honey, or stevia drops instead.

Can I sweeten my iced chai latte with regular sugar instead of syrup?

I don’t recommend it. Since iced lattes are cold sugar doesn’t dissolve easily. To sweeten your iced chai latte, use an easy homemade simple syrup (in the recipe directions below), or sweeten it with a touch of honey, some maple syrup, or a few drops of liquid stevia.

How do you make iced chai tea latte

  • Mason Jar

  • Electric or hand-held milk frother

  • Tea pot (or equivalent)

For the simple syrup (makes 1/2 cup syrup):

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3-4 whole cloves
  • 3-4 whole allspice

For the tea:

  • 1 cup hot water (approximately 2 oz)
  • 2 chai tea bags (or equivalent loose-leaf tea)

For the foamed milk:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons simple syrup (recipe above) (substitute Maple Syrup or a few drops of Stevia, if desired)

For serving:

  • ice cubes
  • cinnamon for topping (optional)

For the simple syrup:

  • Add the water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves and allspice to a pot over medium-high heat and cook until the sugar dissolves.

  • Let the mixture sit and cool to room temperature, and remove the whole spices before adding the syrup to a jar or bottle.

For the chai tea:

  • Steep the chai tea bags in the hot water until strongly brewed (about 5-10 minutes).

For the foamed milk:

  • Add the milk to a mason jar and shake very well to froth. Froth with a hand-held milk frother, if desired.

  • If you'd like a warm latte, heat the milk in a pot and froth with a hand-held frother.

  • Alternatively, froth the cold milk in an electric milk frother (if you have one) on the cold setting (or the hot setting if you'd like a warm latte), or simply shake the mason jar very well until everything is combined and a small layer of foam appears on the top of the milk.

To serve:

  • Pour the milk (over ice, if desired) into each glass or mug. Add 2 tablespoons of the simple syrup to each glass or mug.

  • Pour 1/2 cup of the tea over the milk into each mug or glass.

  • Top each latte with any leftover foam and sprinkle with cinnamon (optional).

The simple syrup recipe makes 8 tablespoons of simple syrup (or 1/2 cup), so feel free to add a little extra simple syrup to each serving depending on your tastes, or substitute with maple syrup if desired.

To make this recipe low carb/keto, simply replace the simple syrup with a few drops of liquid stevia.

For a warm latte, simple skip the ice and heat the milk in a pot on the stove just to a simmer, or in the microwave, before frothing.
