How much concrete do you need?

It'll take quite a few bags of concrete to make a cubic yard. The number of bags you need will vary depending on the type of concrete mix you choose for your project.

  1. If you're using 40lb bags of concrete, you'll need 90 bags to make a yard

how many 80lb bags of concrete are in a yard?

You will need 45 bags of concrete mix to make a cubic yard of concrete.

An 80 lb bag (36.3 kg) of concrete mix yields approximately 0.60 cubic feet (17L)

There's 27 cubic feet of concrete in a cubic yard. If you divide 27 by .60 it equals 45 bags.

How many square feet of concrete will an 80 lb bag do?

That depends on your thickness.

  • @ 2" thick an 80 lb bag of concrete will fill 3.6 square feet
  • @ 4" thick an 80 lb bag of concrete will fill 1.8 square feet
  • @ 6" thick an 80 lb bag of concrete will fill 1.2 square feet

how many 60 pound bags of concrete make a yard?

You will need 60 bags of concrete mix to make a cubic yard of concrete.

A 60 lb bag (27.2 kg) of concrete yields approximately .45 cubic feet (12.7L)

There's 27 cubic feet of concrete in a yard. If you divide 27 by .45 it equals 60 bags of concrete.

How many square feet will a 60 lb bag of concrete do?

  • @ 2" thick a 60 lb bag of concrete will fill 2.7 sq. ft.
  • @ 4" thick a 60 lb bag of concrete will fill 1.35 sq. ft.

how much water will i need per bag?

The amount of mixing water you'll need per bag of concrete will depend on the brand of concrete you're using and the size of the bag.

Always check the manufacture's recommendations for mixing water on the back of the bag.

Below is a chart of approximately how much water you'll need per bag.

Size of bag lb. (kg)

80lb (36.3)

60lb (27.2)

40lb (18.1)

If you want to check how many bags of concrete you will need, use my concrete calculator.

You'll type in your thickness, length, and width, then the calculator will tell you how many 40, 60, or 80 lb bags you'll need to do your project.

how many square feet are in a yard of concrete?

The amount of square feet you will fill with a yard of concrete will depend on the thickness.

  • @ 4" thick a cubic yard of concrete will fill an area of 81 sq. ft.
  • @ 5" thick a cubic yard of concrete will fill an area of 65 sq. ft.
  • @ 6" thick a cubic yard of concrete will fill an area of 52 sq. ft.

FOR EXAMPLE: How many bags of concrete do I need for a 10' x 10' slab?

10 x 10 = 100 sq. ft.

  • For a 4" thick slab, 100 sq. ft. / 81 = 1.23 yards of concrete or 56 (80 lb) bags of concrete
  • For a 5" thick slab, 100 sq. ft. / 65 = 1.54 yards of concrete or 70 (80 lb) bags of concrete
  • For a 6" thick slab, 100 sq. ft. / 52 = 1.92 yards of concrete or 87 (80 lb) bags of concrete

For the calculations above, I rounded up to get an even number of bags.

tools you need to mix and work with concrete

Home improvement retailers who sell Quikrete brand concrete mix gladly refund your money if you purchase more Quikrete than required for a project, but you can save yourself the time, gas money and effort if you calculate the amount of Quikrete needed before you begin the project. Similarly, advance calculations save you from last-minute trips to purchase more Quikrete if you didn't purchase enough product. Quikrete calculation requires only a few measurements and basic math.

  1. 1.

Measure the length, width and height of the are where you plan to use concrete. If you want to use a plastic storage box as a form for stepping stones, measure the length and width of the box and use the desired stepping stone thickness, usually about 2 inches, for the height measurement rather than measuring the entire box height. If you want to install a concrete patio, measuring the area for the concrete patio and use the desired thickness, usually about 4 inches, for the height measurement.

  2. 2.

Convert the numbers in feet and inches into decimal feet. To do this, convert the measurement to inches, then divide by 12. For example, a measurement of 5 feet 9 inches becomes 69 inches. Then divide 69 by 12 to get 5.75 feet.

  3. 3.

Multiple the length times the width, and multiply this product by the height measurement to find the total volume, or cubic feet, you need to fill with concrete. Assume a 10-by-10-foot square area with concrete 4 inches thick. When you multiply 10 by 10 by .333 feet, you get 33.333 cubic feet.

  4. 4.

Divide the total cubic feet needed by the total cubic feet that can be made from one bag of Quikrete Concrete Mix. Quikrete's Concrete Mix yield's about .15 cubic feet for every 20 pounds of mix, so a 40-pound bag yields .30 cubic feet, 60 pounds of concrete mix yields .45 cubic feet and an 80-pound bag yields .60 cubic feet. One 50-pound bag of Quikrete Fast Setting Concrete Mix yields about .375 cubic feet. For example, if you need to cover 33.333 cubic feet, using 60-pound bags of concrete, divide 33.333 cubic feet by .45 cubic feet to get 74.07 total bags of concrete.

  5. 5.

Round up the actual figure to the nearest whole amount to find the actual number of bags needed to complete the project. If your calculations provide a figure of 74.07 bags, you must purchase 75 bags to complete the project.

    Tip

All construction projects have a margin of error, so it is always best to purchase more concrete than you actually need. Always purchase at least two extra bags of concrete or up to 10 percent more than your calculations indicate. You can always return any unopened bags or save the concrete mix for future projects.
