How many quarts of oil for 2015 chevy silverado 1500

Guys need help, I use to have a 2010 Silverado 5.3 that will take 6 quarts, do the new 2015 take 8.5?? I'm doing the first oil change myself. Thanks in advance

As for gm's exact reaaon, I'm not sure.

But generally more oil means cooler oil, longer change intervals and with the longer intervals the engine gets clean oil for a longer amount of time.

All of those are good things.

The only down side I see with .ore oil capacity is the higher cost to change it.

Yes more cost :/ also, they don't sell 1/2 quarts, so the extra 1/2 you save until the next oil change or carry it around in case u need it. So, if u put a little more 8.5 lets say 8.6 or 8.7, will it affect the engine?

Actually the correct amount is 8 quarts. 8.5 quarts overfills the system.

Matt is correct as usual GM has issued the statement that the correct amount is 8 quarts.

One question is why would you do the first change yourself, GM does the first 4 free of charge?

I looked up on GM.com and it states 8.5 is the correct amount. Wildchevy, do u have the link to the statement from GM?

I don't care where you looked it up, it takes 8 quarts. The capacity was revised months ago. Current service information and customer information reflects the change. It's 8. Not 8.5.

RagsMatt is a GM tech so he knows his stuff. But it is 8 quarts. I've seen it multiple times in multiple places.

Around my area all the dealers get overwhelmed on weekends, about 4 to 5 hrs waiting time just for an oil change. Also, I prefer MOBIL 1 full synthetic.

Ragmatt, I did the change this morning and did put 8.5, do u recommend I drain half a quart out, or will it be ok if just leave it as is. Please advise, thanks

It likely won't hurt much to have it like that for 1 oil change. Lots got changed with 8.5 when the trucks were first released.

I think I might just drain some out due a 12 hr trip I'm taking next week. Is it easy to do, loose the plug a little the. Re tight?

A half a quart in the pan will be about 1/32 of a inch higher level in the pan, nothing to worry about IMO, certainly not worth the hassle of trying to drain 1/2 quart back out.

The most I can get in mine is about 7.75 quarts and its right at the full mark.

After this is my 3 oil change and 8.5 quarts is way too much. I dont know why but on my truck full is about 7.5-7.75 quarts depending on how long I let it drip. I put in 7 quarts and roll with it. I always run about a half quart low in all my vehicles.
