UPDATE 1/4/22: Ford has announced full pricing for the 2022 F-150 Lightning lineup and we have updated this story accordingly. The build-and-price tool is now live on Ford's website.

The existing gasoline version of the Ford F-150 starts just above $30,000, but that sum is hardly representative of the broad range of models available. Similarly, the base price that Ford has announced for the new electric version of the F-150, the 2022 Lightning, is only part of the story. The base Lightning, which is intended for commercial customers, will start at $41,669, and the XLT will start at $54,669. But the top Lariat and Platinum trim levels will reach much higher, with the Platinum starting at a whopping $92,569.

All Lightnings will come with all-wheel drive and a crew cab, so by our approximation the most equivalent gasoline model is the 2021 F-150 XL SuperCrew 4WD with a short bed, which costs $41,855. That base version has a 3.3-liter V-6 engine with 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, which pales in comparison with the base Lightning's 426 hp and 775 pound-feet.

The Lightning's base price also undercuts the new hybrid version of the F-150 by a few thousand dollars. A 2021 F-150 XL crew cab with the optional PowerBoost drivetrain starts at $46,350.

When comparing XLT crew-cab versions, the Lightning will be considerably more than an XLT 4WD with the V-6 ($45,500) and a few thousand more than an XLT model with the optional hybrid drivetrain ($49,995).

Ford says that the Lightning will offer two different battery-pack sizes. The Standard Range pack claims a driving range of 230 miles, and the Extended Range, which is optional on all models except the Platinum, is claimed to have a driving range of up to 300 miles. The Extended Range battery pack costs $10,000 on both the XLT and Lariat versions of the F-150 Lightning; it's standard on the Platinum and not available on the Pro.

Price vs. Other Electric Trucks

Now that we've covered how the Lightning fits into the F-150 lineup, what about how it compares to other electric pickups?

The Ford offers several versions that are cheaper than the $67,500 starting price for the upcoming Rivian R1T, which is now on sale. Tesla has offered up a $39,900 base-price estimate for the base version of the Cybertruck, which doesn't have an arrival date set yet. The dual-motor Cybertruck, which is more similar to the Lightning because of its all-wheel drive, has an estimated price of $49,900 and is slated to go into production late this year, if Tesla doesn't reschedule it. The GMC Hummer EV is also considerably more expensive than the Ford, with a starting price of $79,995 for the base version that won't arrive for a few more years.

DETROIT — Ford Motor is increasing the starting price of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup by $5,000 for the 2023 model year, citing rising costs and supply chain issues.

The new price of the 2023 Lightning Pro, an entry-level model meant for commercial and business customers, will be $51,974 — up nearly 11% from previous pricing and a 30% increase from the original $39,974 price in May 2021.

In an emailed statement, Ford said it is adjusting the price "due to ongoing supply chain constraints, rising material costs and other market factors. We will continue to monitor pricing across the model year."

Current retail order holders and commercial and government customers with a scheduled order will be unaffected by the price increase, the company said.

Ford made waves when it announced the starting price for the Lightning would be about $40,000, making it more affordable than many EVs on the market. Wall Street praised the vehicle, and it was a major boost for the company at that time, as investors were concentrating on EV start-ups.

But critical raw material costs such as cobalt, nickel and lithium have more than doubled during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report from AlixPartners this summer.

The cost increases and other supply chain problems, which Ford estimated would result in $1 billion in unexpected costs during the third quarter, have forced automakers to increase EV prices to retain profits.

Less than two months ago, Ford announced price increases of between $6,000 and $8,500 on the Lightning, depending on the model.

The starting prices for the 2023 F-150 Lightning will now range from about $52,000 to $97,000, up from roughly $40,000 to $92,000 for the 2022 model year. Prices exclude taxes and shipping and delivery costs.

Is F

Since 2015, the Ford F-150 has been ranked No. 1, 2, or 3 among all Full Size Pickup Trucks by U.S. News. That likely has something to do with its comfortable interior, smooth ride, and accolades that perennially rank best in its class: towing and hauling capabilities, horsepower, fuel economy, and the list goes on.
