In the Pokemon Trading Card Game, players build decks around their favorite Pokemon and then play against each other, sending their Pokemon into battle to prove who the best Pokemon Trainer is. Players can begin with theme decks - pre-constructed decks designed to cover the basics of the game. Then, they can augment their card collections with booster packs that provide more cards, letting players develop more diverse decks. When it comes to the Pokemon franchise, people are likely most familiar with the video games and anime. However, there is also a long-running manga series called Pokemon Adventures that loosely adapts the stories of the mainline games (sadly none of the underrated spin-offs), following a variety of protagonists on their adventures in the world of Pokemon.

Since Pokemon Adventures is based on a children's video game series, one would imagine that it would be fairly lighthearted. And while most of the manga is written with young kids in mind, there are certain moments that stand out as particularly strange or disturbing, especially for Pokemon.

Over 50 volumes of the Pokemon Adventures manga have been released to date, so reading through them all is no easy feat. So, anyone who just wants to cut to the chase and see what the most disturbing moments are should read on, but take note that this article will be filled with spoilers.

Updated May 28th, 2021 by Jacob Buchalter: The Pokemon Adventures manga has long since held the reputation of being the “edgy and dark” version of Pokemon, but that’s not at all true. Rather, this long-running manga series just tells a more mature version of Pokemon plotlines, with higher stakes than just some ten-year-old losing a battle and feeling bad. Though, thinking about it now, they've never covered the Pokemon Snap plotlines new or old, so maybe that's coming sometime soon.

In fact, the creator of Pokemon, Satoshi Tajiri, once said that this manga series is the closest representation of how he originally imagined the Pokemon Universe. That said, there is still quite a lot in these stories that kids and adults alike would find confusing, so let’s go over some more of the worst offenders now.

15/15 Zombie Pokemon In Red & Blue

Pokemon Adventures: Zombie Psyduck Looking Real Gross

Right in the very first volume of the series, quite a few horrifying things happen. Red goes through all the towns of Kanto, gathering gym badges one by one as one would expect. Then, of course, he eventually ends up in Lavender town. Mr. Fuji tells him about the ghosts in the tower, how Blue went into the tower earlier to investigate, so Red goes to check it out as well.

Not 10 feet in the door, Red runs into the ghosts of deceased Pokemon, but they’re a lot more zombie-like than ghost-like. In fact, after destroying the degrading remains of a Psyduck, Red notices these things are basically corpses piloted by spirits. it's a rather dark event that's very quickly glossed over, but that one panel of zombie Psyduck still haunts a lot of fans to this day.

14/15 Vermillion City Got Blown Up In Yellow

Pokemon Adventures: Vermillion City Decimated By A Hyper Beam

Next up is an event in the series that’s a lot more destructive. The events of Pokemon Adventures Yellow feature a character of the same name (Yellow) searching for Red after he disappeared. To do that, Yellow has to cross the ocean but has no water Pokemon or boat to carry her.

So, Yellow enters a surfing tournament in the hopes of winning the grand prize, a Dragonair. The only problem is Lance shows up all of a sudden and has Dragonair fire a Hyper Beam that literally decimates a portion of Vermillion City.

13/15 Arbok Gets Decapitated In Red & Blue

Pokemon Adventures: charmeleon decapitates arbok pokemon manga

During a battle with gym leader/Team Rocket member Koga, Blue's Charmeleon literally decapitates Koga's Arbok. Though, to be fair, this was the Gen 1 version of Arbok, who was known for being rather weak. Now, it's worth pointing out that later volumes tend to retcon some deaths, but regardless, the image of Arbok being decapitated by Charmeleon is rather startling considering how family-friendly the rest of the Pokemon franchise is and how the manga had been up to this point.

Not to mention Arbok's death wasn't retconned for multiple volumes, meaning most readers were left to assume it was brutally murdered.

12/15 Giovanni Murders Some Magmar In Red & Blue

Pokemon Adventures: Magmar's Frozen In Ice

In basically all of Pokemon media, Giovanni is depicted as the evil leader of Team Rocket, the terrorist organization that comes in conflict with our heroes on multiple occasions. In Pokemon Adventures, Giovanni is even more dastardly than he is in the games and the anime. He proves himself to be capable of some rather heinous acts, like the time he killed a couple of wild Magmars by first freezing them with Cloyster, and then shattering them into pieces.

The Magmars were aggressive, sure, but this felt like such overkill, and still remains as one of the few moments where a Pokemon dies in the entire series.

11/15  Multiple Attempts to Murder Children In Red & Blue

Pokemon Adventures: Grimer Suffocating Red

Pokemon Adventures is notable for consistently providing high stakes, and that means putting the main characters (typically children) in mortal danger quite frequently. Grown adults in the series attempt to murder the children all the time, usually by using the powers of their Pokemon.

For example, Koga attempted to suffocate both Blue and Red using Grimer, and Lt. Surge attempted to both electrocute and blow up Red with Pokemon like Electabuzz and Voltorb. The Pokemon Adventures series uses Pokemon in a lot of unique ways not seen in the games, but a lot of these methods are downright scary rather than interesting.

10/15 Victreebel Attempting To Eat Red In Red & Blue

Pokemon Adventures: Victreebel Almost Eats Red

Just like in the games, Red eventually makes his way to the Safari Zone, a special area where trainers can catch rare and exotic Pokemon. However, the Safari Zone in Pokemon Adventures is far deadlier than the one in the games and sees Red have to fend for himself in the wild without the help of his Pokemon team.

Red's time in the Safari Zone includes a fight against a Nidoking that sees Red blind it by throwing a rock in its eye, but an even more terrifying situation comes about when Red is captured by some Victreebels. The Victreebels plan on dissolving Red (along with some random animals and Pokemon) in acid to then feed his juices to Weepinbells to make them evolve. Yikes.

9/15 Sexualization In Red & Blue

pokemon adventures manga

While Viz Media, the American distributor of the Pokemon Adventures manga, decided to keep most of the violence intact for the English translation, it ended up censoring other things, like the sexualization of underage girls.

There are multiple occasions in the original version of the manga where young female characters are put in compromising or sexually suggestive situations. Needless to say, some of these scenes didn't make it to the American version of the manga.

8/15 The Elite Four Wants To Destroy Humanity In Red & Blue

Pokemon Adventures: All Of The Elite Four Members

Moving on to the Elite Four of the Kanto region, all of which the Pokemon Adventures manga managed to turn into pretty decent villains. Agatha is a conniving trickster who brainwashed Bruno and is convinced Pokemon and humans aren’t meant to get along. Lorelei is a cold and blunt person with these odd ice powers who despises humans for their misdeeds against Pokemon.

Then there’s Bruno, a man solely driven by the hunger to grow stronger and fight in tougher battles, Agatha takes advantage of this to get Bruno to join their plan. And finally, there’s Lance, a man who can speak to and heal Pokemon, which is why he's so angry at humanity. This group’s plan is to wipe out the entire human race and create a paradise for Pokemon to live in. Not sure what people were expecting for the Elite Four in the manga, but a bunch of genocidal maniacs was likely not it.

7/15 Archie & Wallie's Descent Into Madness In Ruby & Sapphire

Pokemon Adventures: Archie & Maxie Looking Very Evil

Hopping right from Red and Blue to the Sapphire and Ruby games, let’s talk about the ancient Legendaries Kyogre and Groudon. These two were constantly locked in a neverending battle that created new islands but was also catastrophic in nature. Eventually, both of them were sealed away, with the objects that allowed humans to control them, the Red and Blue Orbs, being looked after by guardians.

Now, over the course of events in the Ruby and Sapphire volumes, the Team Magma and Team Aqua leaders Archie and Maxie end up taking control of the Red and Blue orbs multiple times, go insane, try and destroy the world, get trapped in the Distortion Realm, and ultimately sacrifice themselves to save the world.

It's an odd character arc for these two that takes place over multiple chapters, and there are a few moments where things absolutely get disturbing. Whether it's the both of them looking insane while controlled by Kyogre and Groudon or when they fade to dust, these two had it rough.

6/15 Norman’s Burning Body In Ruby & Sapphire

Pokemon Adventures: Houndoom Burns Norman's Corpse

There’s a lot that happens in just a single volume of the Pokemon Adventures manga. Every character has some tragic backstory, the villains always have some world-altering evil plan, and the heroes always seem to figure out how to win, despite the odds. But, in the Ruby and Sapphire story, things get pretty dark and victory seems quite far away.

Near the end, Ruby’s Dad, Norman, brings Rayquaza to Sootopolis City to break up Kyogre and Groudon's fighting. But, because Rayquaza doesn’t have an “orb” to control it, Norman had to sort of force it to come along, taking a lot of damage along the way. He eventually dies from his wounds, but not before Ruby figures out that the whole reason his dad Norman had to search for Rayquaza in the first place was thanks to a "mistake" Ruby made as a kid.

To make matters worse, right as Norman dies, Archie and Maxie come back from the Cave of Origin and literally burn Norman’s body just so he can’t take control of Rayquaza again. Of course, because this is Pokemon, Norman and a bunch of other characters are brought back with magical Celebi powers later on. But still, it was a pretty horrifying scene.

5/15 Gigi's Betrayal In Black & White

Pokemon Adventures: Bubu Hops Onto N's Lap

The character N, who was one of the antagonists of the Pokemon Black and White games, has always been an incredibly interesting character. How Pokemon are forced into captivity is a topic the franchise seemed to avoid like the plague. Then came N, who was basically the personification of this concept.

In the games, he’s already scary enough, but in the Pokemon Adventures manga, he’s pretty terrifying. There’s a particular scene where N is alone in a Ferris wheel with the trainer named White. A lot of arguments about ideals between the two trainers happen in this compartment until White decides that she’s had enough. She opens to door to hop out of the Ferris Wheel and escape...somehow, calling out for her Tepig Gigi behind her. But, Gigi instead hops onto N’s lap, completely siding with him rather than her trainer.

This moment isn’t disturbing in the usual ways, rather, it is horribly uncomfortable because the Pokemon franchise has spent decades convincing people that Pokemon don’t really betray their trainers, yet Gigi does exactly that, and for good reason too.

4/15 Ghetsis Beating N Almost To Death In Black & White 2

Pokemon Adventures: Ghetsis Hitting N With His Cane

Going right back to the violent stuff, let’s talk about Ghetsis and N’s relationship. Ghetsis took in N since he was young and basically groomed him to hate humans and eventually become the “King” of Team Plasma. The two of them seemed to have an understanding relationship, but it’s revealed later on that Ghetsis simply used N’s crusade for Pokemon liberation as a way to take any possible methods of retaliation away from the populace.

Eventually, N figures all this out and becomes an enemy of Team Plasma during the Black and White 2 storyline. There’s a particular moment where N saves Ghetsis from falling off the Plasma Frigate. At this moment, the usual cold toward humans N mentions that he’s always loved Ghetsis like a father, despite all that's happened.

And how does this man respond? By beating N almost to death with his cane while saying the most horrible things possible to N so that he'll let him go. It’s just a surprisingly violent and heavy scene that immediately shows the depths of Ghetsis’ villainy.

3/15 All The Heroes Being Turned To Stone At The End Of Fire Red & Leaf Green

Pokemon Adventures: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, & Silver All Turned To Stone

Sird, the leader of Team Galactic, is such an intelligent villain. She’s smart enough to infiltrate Team Rocket without Giovanni figuring it out, powerful enough to hold her own against the Pokedex holders, and conniving enough to use whatever she can to win.

A lot of crazy stuff happens near the end of the Fire Red and Leaf Green story, such as Mewtwo fighting Deoxys, Silver finding out Giovanni is his dad, and Red discovering Deoxys absorbed some of his blood. But, by far the last few pages hold the biggest surprise. After all is said and done and Red, Blue, Green, and Silver are celebrating their victory, Sird shows up again.

RELATED: Pokemon Diamond & Pearl: 7 Major Issues That Must Be Fixed In The Remakes

Barely standing, Sird attempts to try and capture Deoxys with Darkrai, but Mewtwo gets in the way to protect them, and the two clash. Something about Mewtwo clashing with Darkrai causes a unique side effect (this was before Mewtwo even got Psystrike), and the last few panels of this volume show all three Pokedex Holders now frozen in stone. These three kids remain trapped in stone for quite a while, and it’s not until the events of the Emerald Storyline that they are freed.

2/15 Rayquaza Stabbing Zinnia In Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire

Pokemon Adventures: Zinnia Being Stabbed By Rayquaza

As far as tragic characters go, Zinnia has to be one of the most tragic. Like AZ or N, her life is very dark in comparison to everyone else's in this happy-go-lucky Pokemon world. That said, Zinnia usually maintains a jovial sort of personality, likely as a coping mechanism. Zinnia is a Draconoid, an ancient race of people from the Hoenn region who prophesied about an apocalyptic meteor ending the world.

To stop it, Zinnia goes to any lengths in order to summon Rayquaza and form a bond with it. Her method of doing so is relatively similar in both the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games, as well as the manga, but the result is vastly different.

Sure, Zinnia is turned down by Rayquaza both times, but in the manga, she is literally stabbed through the stomach by its tail, held up, and blasted face-first with a Hyper Beam. Somehow she manages to survive this, but it was unequivocally one of the most violent moments in the entire series.

1/15 X Being A Shut-In At The Start Of X & Y

Pokemon Adventures: Y Trying To Get X Out Of His Room

Lastly, let’s talk about X, the protagonist of the X and Y story arc. As far as protagonists go, X is by far one of the most depressing, especially at the beginning. Essentially, the guy won the Junior Pokemon League when he was a kid by using his Kangaskhan's Parental Bond signature ability before it had even Mega-Evolved. Because of his obviously genius-level skill, X was hounded by paparazzi so viciously that he eventually became a shut-in in response.

The entire first chapter is all about X ignoring his Pokemon, sitting huddled in an empty room, as his close friend Y bangs on his window begging him to come outside. Then, to make matters worse, the two Legendaries of that generation, Yveltal, and Xerneas (who has a fantastic design, by the way) both start fighting outside their town!

The reaction from this battle is so strong it basically decimates the village, hurting people and completely traumatizing the cast of kids such as Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno. It’s like something out of the beginning of a JRPG and is much darker than the start of any other Pokemon Adventures story.

What is the rarest Pokemon card?

It turns out the rarest Pokemon card is the 1998 Pikachu illustrator card. This Pikachu is considered the rarest card in all of the Pokemon TCG, but why? Well, only 39 of these cards were ever made. These were given to contestants in a design-your-own Pokemon card contest run by CoroCoro comics.
