The default ring time before wireless voice mail picks up is 22 seconds.
To change the ring time (number of seconds before your voice mail picks up) on your cell phone:
- On your phone's keypad, dial (or tap):
- * * 61 * 13065206245 * * number of seconds #
- The number of seconds must one of these numbers: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30
- For example: To set the ring time to 10 seconds, dial: **61*13065206245**10#
- Press the Phone button (usually a green phone symbol at the bottom of the keypad).
- You may see a message saying the registration has succeeded and the ring time has been changed

The number of rings will vary depending on whether the call is coming from a home phone or wireless phone.
10 seconds | 3 or 4 |

30 seconds | 5 or 6 |

The time before it goes to voicemail is 30 seconds and is set at the system level and can't be changed. Sometimes a different ringtone helps you to hear it ringing sooner.

Thank you for the informative response. Pardon my ignorance but does "system level" refer to the Apple programming in the phone itself or to the Verizon setup?

A user can shorten the number of rings before a call is sent to voicemail by activating the phone's Do Not Disturb (or whatever the manufacturer calls it) feature. That would dump calls directly into voicemail.
As Ann noted, incoming the ringing timer is fixed and cannot be changed, other than to try different ringers.
