I wanted to check the trans fluid on my 06 3.7 cherokee because of hard shifting sometimes when I excelerate and let off the throttle. I noticed tho that there is no transmission dip stick, it has a cap and says in the manual for deal service only? How do I go about checking the trans fluid?

where are you buying it from that you MUSt have the part number?

any online sites i use all have part names, never a number/

and if you plan on strolling into the dealer than have him/her look it up to make sure you get the correct part./

How to check transmission fluid 2006 jeep grand cherokee

Transmission fluid level should be checked at least every 10000km. Checking procedure is pretty simple but it is important  to follow it as described:

  1. Drive the Jeep and bring it to a normal working temperature.
  2. Keep the engine running (idling) for at least one minute before checking the level.
  3. Make sure the jeep stands straight on the ground level.
  4. Clean the dipstick area to avoid dirt from falling into the transmission
  5. While the engine is running and the transmission is in “N” (torque converter fills in both the P (PARK) and N (NEUTRAL))
  6. Pull the dipstick of the transmission and verify that the oil is in the upper range (between the 2 upper dots). If the fluid is cold, then it should be between the 2 lower dots.

If you have to add fluid, make sure it is ATF +4 (or Mopar fluid). Do not overfill it!

In the picture below you can see the transmission dipstick (circled):

Can anyone tell me why there is a tube but no dipstick for testing fluid level on this vehicle? The cap on the tube says for dealer use only. My dealer says that only they can test the level. I tried to buy a dipstick but none is available. What's the story here?

This is from wkjeeps.com:

CHECKING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL:

NOTE:
If equipped with a dipstick, use the following procedure. If your vehicle has a capped dipstick tube, it is sealed and should not be tampered with. Your authorized dealer has the proper tools to ensure that the fluid level is set properly.

---

I find that a bit overboard not allowing someone to check the fluid of a vehicle you are driving.

My 2004 WJ diesel has the same problem, no dipstick. Testing of transmissionfluid can only be done by someone who has a special electronic dipstick, so dealer only.
Really sucks wenn you're in Portugal and for some stupid reason you're fluid level is so low the transmission can't put the power to the wheels. No dealer around, damn you daimler-chrysler.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Do they think we are driving Bentleys or Rolls-Royces?

Well atleats its not like some of the new mercedes with no engine oil dipsitcks and you have to wait for the computer to tell how much oil is in the pan. Genius

Well I agree it should be easy to check. The procedure at the dealer is to plug in the scan tool, use the special dipstick, and the fluid has to be at a certain level depending on the transmission fluid temprature, which is displayed by the scan tool.

Pretty simple... sealed tranny. Look at it this way... you should never have to change the fluid for the life of the Jeep... thats the way they design it.

How do you check the transmission fluid in a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Bring the vehicle up to operating temperature and check fluid level with engine idling. Push dipstick into transmission fill tube until it bottoms out against the transmission pan and pull out, read fluid level. NOTE: The dipstick will protrude from fill tube when installed.

How do you check transmission fluid on a Jeep Grand Cherokee without dipstick?

If the vehicle does not have a dipstick, the transmission fluid must be checked at the transmission. This requires lifting the car on four jack stands; it must be level to check the fluid. There will be a fill plug on the side of the transmission case. This is not the drain plug located at the bottom of the sump.
