How to get w2 from previous employer reddit

That the business is no longer in business does not relieve them of their obligation to timely provide your W-2.

If you don't receive the complete and correct W-2 by February 15, 2019, contact IRS customer service toll-free at 1-800-829-0922 M - F 7am - 7pm local time and speak with a representative.

Let them know you want to request a W-2 complaint. They will ask if you have already contacted the business, and you will say "Yes. Yes I did".

The representative will then ask for your name, address, and SSN. You will also be asked to provide the full business name and mailing address, or last known address.

The CSR will issue a letter to the employer with your information and a description of the penalty assessed for not complying. The letter provides the business ten business days to send your form.

The CSR will send you a letter describing the procedures to follow if you don't timely receive the W-2. You would prepare Form 4852 and include it with your return.

If you file your return using Form 4852, and later receive the W-2, you may have to amend if the wage or withholding amounts are different.

How to get w2 from previous employer reddit

I'm a former employee of H & R Block and I have tried to access my online account from when I was an employee but to no avail after sign-in. I'm then led to a site that tells me I have no access to the Appointment Manager which I could care less about. I used to be able to access my pay-stubs and W-2 for 2013. I only need to see my 2014 W-2. I know the site tells me I should speak to my manager but I can't because I now work for a different tax company so awkwardness will ensue. If I have to ADP then please tell me how to. It says I need a registration code however I wouldn't know it unless I had access to H & R Block's employee site.

So I used to work for a local radio station. I had a quarrel with my parents, who are close friends (if you want to call their strange relationship" friendship") with the owners of this station, and I was fired because of a bunch of bullshit. Thats not a present issue, just the back story for this:

I got a Facebook message (professional right?) from one of these people, asking where to send my 2014 w2. I replied within a few hours, not an unreasonable amount of time. I told them I want to pick it up, not send it out, because my parents and these people don't know where I'm staying, nor do I want them to. About 12 hours later I get a reply, at 9pm, telling me the W2s had been sent out already, according to the info they had on file.

My parents have since moved from this address, which that employer knew, because they're now neighbors with my parents. I'm planning on going by the house to see if a new tenant is there who can give it to me.

Is there anything I can do to make this easier? Can I request them to get another W2, which I had done with other employers (though these were corporate, not private companies)? I don't want to end up fucked on my taxes.

Thanks guys.

I remember that they should have been sent out before February, but it's already the 13th. There have been zero weather issues in my town. I live in sunny southern california... haha.

Am I subject to penalties if I don't receive it from them? I'd rather not drive out there and request it.

How to get w2 from previous employer reddit

I've recently gotten a job and for the background check, the company is requesting the W2 for a previous employer I had worked for 5 years ago. My parents had completed my tax file at that time and I'm not sure where my W2 is. They are out of the country now. I need to submit the W2. Is there any way to get one from the IRS? I submitted the transcript but the bg check is still requesting the actual W2.

level 1

Guess I am being nosy but why would an employer want a 5 year old W-2? Or any W-2? Usually a background check is done by an independent company.

level 2

This was my first thought. Seems super sketchy.

level 2

Hi, An independent company (Sterling) is doing the background check. It's an entry level biochemist job at a big company. Sorry if my original post wasn't clear. The restaurant I worked at closed so I guess they want to know if I actually worked there.

level 2

Not saying this is them, but my current job couldn't verify my employment at a previous company from 6 years ago. The old company wouldn't pick up the phone, not even for me when I called. I called and emailed and never got an answer (I still had old coworkers who were there and providing me current info). So I had to eventually dig up my W2 to prove I worked there. Current job was chill as I was "the one" they were choosing.

And this is a big company (idk the independent company they used) trying to get info from a big if not bigger company. Weird shit.

level 1

Its more than 5 years ago, just tell them you don't have it.

level 1

Tell them the truth is you don't have it and BTW They want to see your W-2 to see your past salary.

level 2

I have always been able to redact the dollar amounts on W-2's I've had to submit for background checks were my employer is OOB.

level 1

the company is requesting the W2 for a previous employer I had worked for 5 years ago

Tell them the company has shut down and you can't find it. Asking for a W-2 from 5 years ago is already a massive reach by a new employer. There's zero reason why they need that info.

level 1

I would request your transcripts from the IRS. That would have all of the federal information that appeared on the W2. It would not have the state information if you live/worked in a state with income tax.

level 2

I submitted the transcript but the bg check is still requesting the actual W2.

level 1

I did this to join my current company and they gave me full permission to draw over and mark out all the personal information like salary, info, etc. all they wanted to see was my name, the employer name and address and the year of the return or w2

level 1

IRS.gov has a way to pull tax transcripts for you and any tax record you were part of. I had to do this for a position also. It is on their website.

level 1

The IRS has a copy of your W2’s available online for the past 10y. Anything beyond 10yrs you have to call them to pull the records.

level 1

I think you can also provide proof by pulling it from the IRS

level 1

You can request tax history from the IRS that will basically say where you've worked for a given year

The IRS is pretty dope sometimes

level 1

Check with whomever you used to do your tax returns and see if they scanned any supporting docs. Maybe they have a copy.

Recommendation for the future keep all tax returns and supporting documents for 7 years and if you own a business keep 10 years.

level 1

I think you can get that data from your tax info. Create an IRS account and see. Checking your IRS account is a good idea in any case.
