If you haven’t yet had the chance to watch Dr. Seuss‘ 2018 animated film The Grinch on Netflix this year, you may have lost your shot. The streaming giant just removed the title on December 4th, right before the holidays and subscribers are outraged, to say the least. The movie was a regular on the platform’s Top 10 titles in the U.S. list for some time now, however the streaming deal with Illumination and Universal Pictures has expired. You can still stream Jim Carrey‘s live-action Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas — if that does it for you — on the streamer for the time being. The Grinch is narrated by Pharrell Williams and boasts a voice cast including Benedict Cumberbatch (as The Grinch), Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Cameron Seely & Angela Lansbury. It was directed by Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney with screenplay by Michael LeSieur and Tommy Swerdlow. The popular Christmas tale follows The Grinch and his loyal dog, Max, who live high up on a mountain by themselves in a cave on Mount Crumpet. Because he was an orphan and never got to celebrate Christmas, he despises the holiday and his cheery Whoville neighbors when they go above and beyond to celebrate it. In the film, the Whos decide to make their Christmas the biggest and brightest yet and the curmudgeonly Grinch plots a scheme to pose as Santa Claus to steal Christmas, with his dog’s help, and silence the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all. TagsHow the Grinch Stole Christmas isn't on Netflix and people are upset about it. Both the Holiday classic and The Grinch from 2000 are curiously missing from the service. Just last year, viewers could boot up Netflix and enjoy the festive animated movie and its live-action counterpart. But, in the world of increased streaming services, there are too many places to look. For the animated feature, Peacock or Amazon Prime Video are going to be your best bet for streaming content. Meanwhile, there are places like Hulu for the later movies. It's a bit of a hassle to have to cross-reference a spreadsheet just to watch something on television that you've enjoyed with your family your entire life. But, that's the state of the media landscape at the moment. But, at least take some comfort in the fact that you might not be the only person upset that a Holiday staple is now behind a paywall. Its long tenure on Netflix was odd given Netflix tends to only get movies from other distributors one 1 to 3-month stints.
