It just lets air in and out of your diff...

When you are driving the fluid inside gets hot and expands, pushing air out of your diff.

When it cools off, the fluid contracts and air is sucked back in.

If you didnt have it, when the heated up, pressure would build up and could cause the seals to blow out.

It does exactly that, good thing to have otherwise you will find yourself running into a lot of problems that you dont want.

Is it run up high so when you go into deep water it helps keep the water out of the diffs? I know it will find it's way in other places though.

People often relocate these so they arent as likely to get water, they do the same for the tranny breather.

I'm going to have to find out more about that. As I've said here in Houston it's mud and water. And the water part is just the drive home from work!!!!

If you wheel alot in water/mud you should change your diff fluid more often. Regardless of if you relocate your breather tube or not, water may get in via other routes.

What does an axle breather hose do?

Using the hose restricts debris while allowing air in and out easily. Axle vents allow pressure inside the differential to equalize with the atmospheric pressure.
