View Full Version : Good Times (posted) "Good Times" by Dave Grusin and Andrew Bergman Good Times, Not getting hassled, Temporary lay offs, Closing theme lyrics: Just lookin' out of the window Actually, the second line from the end credits is: Watching the asphalt glow. (from the sun beating down on it.) aflat 12-04-2001, 06:45 AM I have been going crazy trying to figure out those few lines. Thanks TJ. mindj 03-22-2002, 05:28 PM Thinking how it all looks "hand me down" has got to be wrong. That makes absolutely no sense. Also what in the world does "hangin' in a jury mean"? Will someone please get the correct words to the theme song? This has been driving me crazy for years. snowpeck 04-07-2002, 07:30 PM The line "hangin in a jury" is very wrong. The line is "hangin and a-jivin". The hand-me-down line is correct. When something is hand-me-down, it is all used and old, like hand-me-down clothing from an older brother or sister. Also, they are watchin the asphalt grow. Asphalt doesn't grow. This is to point out the fact that there is no grass. The real phrase is "watching the grass grow". But in this neighborhood there is no grass so all you can do is watch the asphalt. phillyphilet 04-18-2002, 09:28 AM Actually I heard that the line "hangin in a jury" was "hangin in a chow-line" Wildchats 06-30-2002, 10:51 PM This is how I thought the song went: Good times phillyphilet 07-10-2002, 09:24 PM Anytime your offered money (or) Monday I heard it was "Anytime your our from under" Salvatore 12-04-2002, 02:00 AM Actually it is "Just looking out of my window watching the pavement go" does anyone know where I can find the sheet music to the "good times" theme song?
RollerGirl 02-08-2003, 05:46 AM maybe it's "hanging in a job line"? like at the unemployment office? just a suggestion :D The opening lyrics have been adjusted to what is listed on the Good Times Season 1 DVD set box. The most debated line they have listed as: Hangin' in a chow line Unless someone can provide the sheet music, I am going with these lyrics. TJAMES03 08-01-2005, 09:49 PM Wouldn't the DVD's have closed captioning? You could find out that way. porky141 08-10-2005, 04:55 PM I found it on the website - http://www.cfhf.net/lyrics/good-time.htm. As for the lyrics in question it's "Watchin' the asphalt grow. Thinkin' how it all looks SANITIZED". Anyway I hope this helps. OPENING THEME LYRICS Good Times. Temporary lay offs. - Good Times. CLOSING THEME LYRICS Mmmmmm Keepin' your head above water Temporary lay offs. - Good Times. princessoftales 08-15-2005, 05:27 AM I always thought the line was "watching the asphalt grow" with the same explanation that someone above gave. Anytime your offered money (or) Monday <<< This was the funniest wrong line. Opening lyrics: Closing lyrics: MsDivine 09-15-2005, 10:53 PM I really don't think that hangin in a "chow" line would be considered a GOOD TIME! Besides, they were poor and living in the projects...not HOMELESS and HUNGRY. Florida was cookin all the time. To the person who said the line was: "Hangin and a jivin" (maybe that was correct). Also, is possible that the line after Keepin' your head above water, could be "making a WAY when you can"?? Just a thought, cause we were always tryin' to make a way. :thanx: TVJunkie22 10-18-2005, 03:26 AM The line "hangin in a jury" is very wrong. The line is "hangin and a-jivin". Mmmmmm Ireneparalegal 11-04-2005, 08:59 PM Watching the asphalt grow!!!!!! it's poetic, in a ghetto good time way...they had no grass, they live in the big city with nothing but asphalt around. Good_Times1 11-05-2005, 09:17 PM Yes, I always thought it was that too. It may very well be. I am from the Boogie Down Bronx. I know about asphalt. But Listen to the closing theme on this site and it sounds like "thrown". Turn up your speakers. Doesn't it? hangin' in a "chow line" sounds so "not black". People from the hood don't do that. The writers of the song were Jewish but Blinky and Jim could have improvised on the sung lyric and made it hangin' and a jivin' but the copyright may say "hangin' in a chow line". we just would never say something like that in da hood. prime-evil 11-10-2005, 01:14 AM to its 'hanging in the chow line' ive ot closed captions on my tvs...:) nursekare 05-07-2006, 05:43 PM Quote from Good_Times1: Good Times Temporary lay offs I believe the closing theme goes Mmmmmm Watchin' the asphalt thrown Thinkin' how it all looks hand me down Good Times I just thought that I'd put my little 2 cents in. nursekare legin57 05-08-2006, 01:54 AM the **** iz wrong with ya'll.............do you understand the wordz that are comin out my mouth? EVANS Biotchez!!!!! I KNOOOOOOW!!!!! :D Flowery Day 09-23-2006, 06:02 PM LOL ... All these renditions are priceless!!! I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who had trouble over the years hearing the lyrics! Even when it was first on the air I couldn't get all the words! I was so proud of myself just the other day, when I FINALLY FIGURED OUT it's "IF WE'RE LUCKY WE GOT 'EM!", after all these years! I always thought it was IF WE LOVE YOU WE GOT 'EM"... I tell ya though, I gotta disagree with the thought that "asphalt doesn't "glow""... IT DOES! On a HOT DAY it can be BRUTALLY BRIGHT!!! I had to walk across a HUGE parking lot several times a week some years ago, and got very dizzy, and nearly passed, needing to go back inside for awhile, because of the reflection, glare, and HEAT it gave off besides! :S .. I wasn't very well at that time, and pretty weakened, but it was no halucination, it was a terribly dangerous GLOW! .... Be that as it may, I still think, for the theme song, that "grow" makes more sense :) HELLO ALL, I'm new here and decided to jump right in to this board FIRST, {instead of the introduction board}, as this is where I first SAW the great board, and found just what I was looking for, in the first place!! :D ... Also, I thought it was "Any time you MEET a friend!" ... silly me!

from under Keepin' your head above water (translation: not drowning in bills/debts) Makin' a WAY when you can (translation: maneuvering your finances [if possible] to try to get yourself ahead) Temporary lay-offs CLOSING THEME Just lookin' out of the window Watchin the asphalt glow (translation: in the ghetto, there are no manicured lawns therefore there's nothing for the sun to shine on except asphalt) Thinkin' how it all looks 'handed down' (translation: everything in the ghetto looks like someone else's hand-offs or hand-outs or 'hand-me-downs' -- in other words, something from yesteryear but certainly not up-to-date or new) Good Times - hey yeah Actually, the second line is "Any time you MEET a friend". I don't know why it keeps getting written as "need". It sounds very
clear in the song. I can't believe nobody else has ever heard the right lyrics! visaman666 08-09-2011, 03:36 AM John Amos VO: From Studio City in Hollywood its... I sent a fb message to Jim Gilstrap and Blinky Williams the ones to sang the song and they both say the lyrics are: I always thought it was "Catching a Wave when you Can" Romantheengineer 02-20-2018, 01:45 AM Guys, it's actually, vBulletin® v3.8.11, Copyright ©2000-2022, vBulletin Solutions Inc. |
