Whether you’re a working mom, not feeling well (which, in new moms can include being so tired you can’t keep your eyes open) or want to share the feeding of your baby with your partner, breast pumps can be a lifesaver. They let you express milk even if your baby isn’t ready for a feed and give you the freedom you sometimes need if you’re returning to work or just want a night off to go out with your significant other, family or friends.

At the same time, you can be confident that your baby is getting all the nutrients they need because, even though formula isn’t wrong for your little one, breast milk has been proved to have additional benefits; these include reducing the risk of infections, allergies, and asthma, as well as potentially helping prevent conditions such as obesity and diabetes as they grow older.

For moms in the market for a breast pump, the first thing you’ll notice is how many choices you have…there are a lot! We’re looking at just one of those today, the Lansinoh Smart Pump, which we think is one of the best double electric breast pumps you can buy.

We’ll look at the pump’s key features, what’s good and not so good about it, and what other moms who use it are saying as well as alternatives if it doesn’t sound like the one for you.

How to Pick the Best Breast Pump

Types of breast pumps available

While the range of breast pumps available is vast and can seem confusing to those who are just starting to look at what might work for them, they generally fall into three main categories:

1. Electric Breast Pumps: These come as single or double breast models (which allow you to express milk about of both breasts at the same time) and maybe battery or mains operated. The benefits of an electric breast pump are they are quick and easy to use and work exceptionally well for working moms who need to express milk regularly. However, they can be bulky and awkward to carry and, no matter how quiet they are, will still make some level of noise.

2. Hospital Grade Breast Pumps: These are electric too, though they tend to bigger than your standard electric breast pump and are much more expensive.  They are however some of the best on the market if you can afford them (if you can’t, you could look at renting one, which is quite common).

3. Manual Breast Pumps: These have no batteries, and no wires like electric breast pump options, and the speed at which you can express milk are determined purely by how much force you can apply.  It takes longer to produce a bottle of milk with manual breast pumps. However, the benefits include the price, the portability, and the lack of noise.

Considerations When Buying a Breast Pump

Lansinoh smartpump 2.0 breast pump starter set reviews

Buying a breast pump is a big decision, in part because they can be costly but also because a pump has to fit in with your life and that of your family; there is no point, for example, buying a breast pump that is mains operated if you plan on using it where there are no power sockets.

We looked in-depth at how to find the best breast pump back in February so it might be worth checking our article out.  To make it easier, however, we’ve covered the key factors you need to consider when making your decision here too, including:

  • Type: we’ve already looked at the three main types available, so you’ll need to decide between these which works best for you.  A manual pump might be okay, for example, for occasional home use, while if you plan on expressing milk every day, you will be much better off with an electric model.
  • Strength: One of the main benefits of the electric and hospital grade pumps is there strength; the stronger the pump, the quicker you can express milk.  Electric and/or hospital-grade pumps normally come with multiple suction levels which means you can find the one you’re most comfortable with.
  • Portability: The more bells and whistles a pump comes with, the heavier it is likely to be (though this isn’t always the case).  This is fine unless you need to take it with you when you go to work or if you’re traveling, meaning how portable the pump is will be something you need to consider.
  • Noise: In general, today’s electric breast pumps are quiet.  However, they are not entirely silent, and some are louder than others.  Most tell you the noise level you might expect when you buy them, though it’s also a good idea to read reviews by people who’ve bought them because they can give you a realistic view of what you might expect to hear.

It would help if you also thought about accessories and whether you’ll need to make any additional purchases on top of the breast pump itself.  These might include spare parts, a cooler or a pump bag (or tote bag).  You’ll need to think about pumping bras and milk storage bags too.

Lansinoh Smart Pump – Our In-Depth Review

Lansinoh smartpump 2.0 breast pump starter set reviews
The Lansinoh Smart Double Electric Breast Pump, which is available on Amazon for $127, is ideal for moms who need to pump milk regularly.

It can be used from the mains or batteries and is designed for comfort, comes with two different size flanges, and with adjustable speed and suction settings. There are eight different suction levels and three pumping styles, which you match to your babies’ feeding patterns.

Lansinoh has thought about safety for your baby too with their breast pump. It’s BPS and BPA-free and built with a closed system which means your milk can be kept free of bacteria and viruses (plus, it saves you time because you don’t have to clean and dry the tubing).

Also, there’s a handy Bluetooth App that connects the pump to your phone, so you can manage when you pump and breastfeed.

An added benefit of this breast pump is everything that comes with it: you get two flanges, a storage cooler for your breast milk, storage bottles, a bottle stand, nipples, a power cord (ac adapter) as well as a pump bag and replacement parts.  One thing it doesn’t come with is batteries, which you’ll need if you want to take advantage of its portability.

Lasinoh Smart Pump Features

  • Comfortable flanges, which come in two sizes
  • App to help you manage your pumping and breastfeeding schedule
  • Closed system for hygiene
  • Three pumping styles
  • Eight suction levels
  • Easy to use control panel which includes a display screen that shows pumping style, suction level and pumping time

Lasinoh Smart Pump Pros

  • The price: you get an awful lot for just $127
  • Works for different breast sizes
  • Easy to monitor pumping time
  • The app alerts you when you need to pump
  • Protects your baby from bacteria and viruses
  • Flexible with three pumping styles and eight suction levels
  • Easy to clean and keep clean
  • Comes with everything you need including bottles, a cooler and a pump bag
  • Compatible with flanges from other breast pumps if the ones provided don’t work (though you do need to check compatibility)

Lasinoh Smart Pump Cons

  • Noise levels: Some online reviews have said the pump is louder than they expected.
  • Doesn’t come with batteries (you need six AA-size)
  • The app is not always accurate (possibly due to poor connectivity)

Lasinoh Smart Pump Alternatives

Medela Sonata Smart Double Electric Breast Pump

Lansinoh smartpump 2.0 breast pump starter set reviews

Like Lansinoh, Medela is one of the most well-known and well-respected manufacturers of breast pumps, which means you won’t go far wrong with their Sonata Smart Double Electric Breast Pump (though you will be paying more as it costs approximately $350).

With the Sonata, Medela says they offer moms hospital-grade performance in a pump designed for personal use.  It is rechargeable, has two phases, helping maximize milk expression, and an App that lets you plan your pumping and breastfeeding schedule (as well as a free month of support from a live lactation consultant).  The pump is incredibly quiet, meaning it can be used pretty much anywhere, and is very easy to use thanks to a simple touch screen display.

Features:

  • Rechargeable
  • Lightweight
  • Touch screen display
  • Closed system with air leak function
  • Ten suction levels and two phases

Pros:

  • Nice and portable thanks to its weight and rechargeable battery
  • Easy to use thanks to the touch screen display and App
  • Flexible thanks to the multiple suction levels and two phases
  • Very quiet, meaning it’s perfect for use at work / in the office

Cons:

  • Battery life isn’t that long, lasting no more than four pumps before needing to be recharged
  • You can’t program the settings, and there is no memory function, meaning you have to enter them every time.

Philips Avent Double Electric Breast Pump

Lansinoh smartpump 2.0 breast pump starter set reviews

The Philips Avent Double Electric Breast Pump is a much more affordable option than the Medela (at $147.95, it’s much more in line with the Lansinoh). Another well-known and well-respected brand, the Avent breast pump has a no-lean forward design which is supposed to make it easier to use.

It isn’t, however, battery-powered, meaning you’ll need to be close to the mains to use it. On the plus side, however, it is easy to use thanks to a simple control panel, and compact and lightweight.

Features:

  • BPA free
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Mains operated
  • Easy to use and designed for comfort
  • Three expression levels

Pros:

  • Highly portable
  • Easy to use
  • Comes with accessories including bottles and an insulated bag
  • Can be pre-programmed and remembers your settings

Cons:

  • Can only be used through the mains
  • Noise levels: some reviewers have said it is louder than other models in the same price range
  • Can be awkward to pre-program, though once you’ve done this, you don’t have to do it again.

Which Is The Better Option?

At the beginning of this article, we said that the Lansinoh Smart Breast Pump was one of our favorites and this review hasn’t changed our opinion. It offers excellent value for money, especially when you add in the accessories pack that comes with it, and is simple and easy to use.

Thanks to being lightweight, you can take it anywhere and, because it works through the mains or batteries, you can use it anywhere too, making it ideal for working moms or people on the go.  Expressing milk is comfortable thanks to the choices of flanges and the ability to swap these out for others if they don’t work for you.

You don’t get as many options with the other Philips Avent and, as it only works from the mains, it isn’t anywhere near as portable.  The Medela is and probably matches the Lansinoh when it comes to the features, but it is also costly, putting it out of the price range of many new moms.

Plus, you have to ask yourself why you would pay that much when you can get everything you need and more for half the price without having to compromise on quality.
