The 2018 4Runner compares favorably to other 2018 model year vehicles in the US midsize SUV segment such as the Ford Explorer, Jeep Wrangler and Toyota's own Highlander. In the segment, its off-road prowess is unmatched except for the rock crawling abilities found in the Jeep Wrangler four-door. The 4Runner features 9.6 inches of ground clearance (fifth generation 4WD models from 2010), which is significantly more than competitors like the Explorer (7.8 inches) and the midsize Highlander (8.0 inches), but falls short of the 2018 Wrangler's 10.2 inches. 

All four vehicles come with six-cylinder engines as either standard or optional. The 270 horsepower found in the 2018 4Runner's standard 4.0L V6 is a bit less than these three competitors, though all other vehicles offer engines with more horsepower. For comparison, the 2018 Explorer can be had with a maximum of 365 hp (optional), the 2018 Wrangler with 285 hp (standard), and the 2018 Highlander with 295 hp (optional). However, the 4Runner's rating of 278 ft-lbs. of torque bests all three except for the 350 ft-lbs. that come with Explorer's optional 3.5L turbo engine. In the end, the 4Runner offers a versatile powertrain to go with all of the off-road goodies. 

On the miles-per-gallon end, the 2018 4Runner has an EPA-estimated 18 MPG combined city/highway rating.1 That is comparable to the combined city/highway figures for the 2018 AWD Explorer (an EPA-estimated combined 19 MPG with the standard 3.5L V6) and 2018 4WD Wrangler (EPA-estimated 18 MPG combined with the standard 3.6L V6) models, but the 2018 AWD Highlander (EPA-estimated 22 MPG combined when equipped with the comparable 3.5L V6).1 The 4Runner has never been offered with a hybrid engine. 

Inside, the 2018 4Runner has optional seating for seven, which the Explorer and Highlander also offer. The Wrangler only seats five in all four-door variations. 

The amount of technology and optional packages has kept up nicely with the competition, making the 4Runner a must for anyone's midsize SUV shopping list.
