Got a MY11 and the car just locked itself with the fob inside. The fob has come up with low battery but was still working. Any tricks to open the car???

Urgent help please!

If the Jeep has the keyless passive entry open door handles, keep trying including the hatch.

If no success and no spare fob or key, might want to give a call to the local police or the local lock smith.
Most police depts. will come out and 'try' to get the door open with a slim jim.
A lock smith might try picking the door lock first.
If that don't work, its probably a call to the dealership.
Maybe someone else here has some other ideas.

This is one fear i have with these passive entry open door fobs.
Don't know about the '11's but my '18 fob has a detachable emergency door key which i keep on a separate key chain from the fob.
My fob never leaves my left pocket. The house, garage, barn, etc. including the emergency key are kept my right pocket.
Probably overkill but i won't ever get accidentally locked out of my Jeep....that is unless i get car jacked or robbed. haha!

Well, a 2.5 hour round trip to get the spare key solved the problem.

Seems the key fob battery decided to go flat, freaked out, locked the car. So it CAN happen.

Since as far back as I can remember I have always had a spare key taped or tied with a piece of wire and hidden somewhere under the vehicle. I pick a spot that is hidden from view and able to be reached without too much effort.
Both the 07 and 19 have a key cut to gain access to the inside of the vehicle. These keys will open the doors, set off the alarm, won't start the engine but will allow me to grab the keys locked inside. They're cheap money too since they're non-chipped.

I just bought a 2018 Grand Cherokee. I was loading groceries at Target in single digit weather, jumped into car to start it, left keys on seat, finished loading groceries and all 4 doors were locked. Fob was on driver seat with car running. Outside door button would not unlock. AAA came, unlocked passenger door and I manually unlocked all doors using unlock button on inside of door. I closed door and walked around to drivers side and all doors were again locked. Luckily AAA was still there and just unlocked again but so confused!! Is there some weird setting to disable? I can see this being a real problem - if I get out of car to move trash cans, grab mail, etc. car would lock itself based on today’s actions.

This is a Jeep Cherokee forum, but I'm going to tell you that the behavior isn't normal operation.

FCA vehicles have a safety feature that don't allow you to lock a key in the car unless you have a key outside the car.

Even if you purposely try to lock it with the key in, it should unlock immediately.

You need to take the vehicle to the dealer and roll the window down and then show them this. They need to fix it.

If the previous owner put an aftermarket system on this vehicle for remote start or something, have it removed.

This is a KL Cherokee forum, not a Grand forum, you might have better suggestions here: Grand Cherokee - WK2 -
So, after getting locked out you again left the keys in the car???
But an obvious lesson, is to always keep your keys with you...

Happy New Year, and stay safe!

Hey I had that exact scenario happen to me in my 2014 Cherokee trailhawk. Stupid remote start seemed to bypass any safety measures put in place by the Jeep engineers.

On a tangent, in Australia our Fords for a time used Tibbe high security key locks - they're a lock that uses a stack of discs internally - with the key looking like a round shaft with little flats in different places. You could recode a lock to a specific key by setting the sequence of discs as required. The hilarious thing about those keys / locks is that altho only the specific key will UNlock the specific lock that's configured to it, any key will lock ANY lock!! I was always SO tempted to lock people's cars when I went past them idling at the curb while bozo driver was at the nearby ATM etc. (was surprisingly common as recently as ten years or so ago here). Never did tho.

And when I was a kid, there was some promo from a big cereal brand where there were plastic keys in random packs of their products - which you mailed in to see if they opened the locks on boxes containing prizes. One day while we were in town shopping I was being typical little kid - trying my keys in each car as I was tagging along behind my Mom bored outta my skull while she was window shopping. I had about 30 cars unlocked before she realised what I was doing :-D

The same thing happens if you use the key fob to open the back hatch and happen to put the keys in the back with the groceries, then close the hatch.

Doors are locked and you can't unlock them from the outside.

I have trained myself to never put the keys anywhere except my pocket.. It has served me well.. Esp since push button start and keyless entry(or whatever its called where it unlocks when you put your hand on the door handle)

I think the car can run for 40 miles or 40 minutes I forget which. did that when I dropped the car off for some kind of service. kept the fob in my pocket but the tech drove off w/ the car. he came out into the waiting room, asked for the fob & explained something to that effect, something about valet parking ...

Like rumrunner said, this is not true and I question if it will ever shutoff due to safety issues.

I heard of one person who had a Jeep and his wife drove off in it while he had the keyfob in his pocket. She was 20 miles or so away by the time he noticed it and called her. She then turned around and made it home.

Must be on different vehicles, because I just saw a story on our local news about it, that's why I mentioned it...LOL!!!😎

My 2020 TH doesn't lock if the current key fob (on the 2nd one, 1st fob battery is low) is left inside. I am guessing the state of the battery may determine how effective this is. If its low and aways from one of the interior receivers, I can see locking your keys inside.
