If you're liking the classic, darker turn of recent Lupin III films, you're in for a lot more fun. New images and info bites have surfaced for the upcoming theatrical release The Blood Spray of Ishikawa Goemon, and it's looking like a grim, gritty look back at the first meeting between the gentleman thief and the legendary swordsman.  Images released today show a decidedly younger Lupin and Goemon, as well as a new, brutish villain known as The Bermuda Spectre. By all accounts, the film is pitching itself as a prequel to the long-running franchise. While we have seen and heard various accounts of the first meeting between the two characters (a notable one being in the 30th anniversary special Episode 0: First Contact), this could well put them all to shame. If we go back to some of the earliest accounts in the manga, Goemon hangs out with Lupin and the gang because he wants Lupin dead -- in particular, Goemon wants to be the one to kill him. Whether this will hold true in the upcoming film is anyone's guess, but seeing as the recent run of Lupin media has gone back to some much older concepts (such as Goemon and Fujiko being an item), it just might. Takeshi Koike (The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, The Gravestone of Daisuke Jigen) will be back directing again, as well as producing alongside long-time Lupin III producer Yu Kiyozono. The script will be provided by Yuuya Takahashi, who penned the Jigen film and the blue jacket series, and James Shimoji (also of Redline) is returning from the Jigen film to provide the score. In The Blood Spray of Ishikawa Goemon, Goemon is branded as a traitor when he fails to prevent the assassination of the leader of a criminal syndicate for whom he was serving as a bodyguard. The true assassin is actually "The Spectre of Bermuda", a murderous soldier who goes by the code name "Hawk" and who has slain more than 2000 foes on the battlefield. Now Hawk is out to take the lives of Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, and Fujiko Mine as well... Lupin III: The Blood Spray of Ishikawa Goemon is directed by Takeshi Koike and features animation by TMS Entertainment. The film slashes into theaters in Japan on February 04, 2017.
