Port huron trash pickup schedule 2022

It’s that time of year again: Leaf pickup services are either underway or about to begin in communities across St. Clair County.

In Port Huron, where concerns about late pickups and forgotten streets have riddled officials’ inboxes in years past, Public Works Director Eric Witter said they’ve set the usual schedule and met with the city’s refuse contractor, Emterra Environmental, to hash out details.

Pickup begins Monday in half the city, and Witter said they’re asking people “just to be patient.”

“Obviously, every year, we try to have at least a six-week program where they collect throughout the city,” he said, adding so much of the annual program depends on how early it snows and when and how quickly leaves fall.

“The longer they sit, the harder they are to pick up,” Witter said. “It comes down to mother nature and the contractors’ operation.”

Port Huron’s schedule starts Monday for Zone 1, which is all of the city south of the Black River. The schedule then alternates with weekly pickup periods with Zone 2 north of the river.

It is broken down as follows:

  • Zone 1: Weeks beginning Oct. 19, and Nov. 2 and 16
  • Zone 2: Weeks beginning Oct. 26, and Nov. 9 and 23

Witter encouraged residents to have their leaves raked early.

“We ask they’re out by 7 a.m. the first (day) of that week and that collection will occur any time that week,” he said. “We also ask they’re within four feet of the curb so the contractor can pick those up.”

If residents miss leaf pickup, they can still put small piles into yard waste bags marked with an X for pickup on regular trash day through Dec. 18.

There have been changes or additional pickups after weather issues or complaints since Emterra took over as Port Huron’s refuse collector several years ago.

Witter said city officials recently sat down with the company to go over issues from the previous year.

“It’s a challenging program to administer, so hopefully, we get through it this year,” he said.

Emterra representatives did not return a request for comment as of Friday. Witter said the city was told the company had increased the number of trucks and leaf vacuums that would be used this year.

“We will obviously look for those in the coming week,” he said.

What about outside of Port Huron?

Emterra is among the more oft-used refuse collectors across the county, in general. In addition to Port Huron, others include Marysville, Algonac and Marine City.

However, they don’t all have specific leaf pickup schedules.

In Marysville, the city’s schedule is broken down to daily pickups with each of five zones being hit every week. That schedule began Oct. 12 and continues through Dec. 4.

A breakdown of that schedule and the city’s zones is available at http://cityofmarysvillemi.com under an “other links” column and maps.

Marysville Public Services Director Barry Kreiner said there were some changes to how long Emterra was expected to pick up leaves daily if there was “a truck lagging behind.” But he said he hadn’t anticipated any major issues.

Elsewhere, according to local public works sites, communities may have yard waste pickup seasons that usually end Nov. 30.

Fort Gratiot, too, has a yard waste season, which Supervisor Rob Crawford said ended by early December. The township’s contractor, however, was Marcotte.

St. Clair also lists yard waste collection through Waste Management, as well as a fall leaf pickup map with a similar five-zone daily schedule map as Marysville. Specifics weren’t immediately available.
