Hi everyone, I thought it would be useful to start a new thread about the different 64mm burr options from SSP. The information on this subject is a bit scattered at the moment so gathering thoughts and user experiences in the same topic will be helpful for many, including myself. Here's what I gathered so far: There are 3 different 64mm burr geometry currently offered by SSP: 1. Original or High Uniformity 2. Unimodal or Brew 3. Multipurpose or Unimodal espresso (Brew burrs modified per Option-O's request to create more fines) *There's also a burr set for Anfim/ECM which are HU burrs but left handed. There are 5 finish options: - Non coated *SSP claims a lifetime of 1000kg for non-coated and 5000kg for coated burrs. There have been numerous discussions, TDS and EY% datas, comparaisons between the different burr sets, etc. Here a few links I find relevant for this topic: - Lagom P64 thread: - Lagom P64 FAQ where the different burr options are explained: https://www.option-o.com/faq-lagom-p64 -
Jake_G's Super Jolly SSP upgrade thread: - Fellow Ode thread: - G-iota grinder thread: I will update/correct this post so it's easy to retrieve the information. Subjects often discussed regarding the SSP 64mm burr options: * Full disclosure: I don't currently own any SSP burr set. Like many others, I'm in the market for (or considering I should say) new burrs and have gone through A LOT of reading... Cheers! What are red speed burrs? The burrs are coated with Red Speed giving it more resistance to wear and low friction coefficient enabling you to grind more coffee beans. Price wise they are not too far from the price point of the original burrs. In fact the EK43 red speed burrs are cheaper than the original ones making it more desirable.
Are flat burrs better than conical? The answer is: it depends. Generally speaking, flat burrs are more consistent and more expensive. Depending on the model, they can also be noisy and, unless there is good ventilation, heat up quickly. In contrast, most conical burrs are quieter, cooler, and cheaper, but less consistent.
What are SSP burrs made of?SSP's 64 mm flat burrs were made to last a lifetime. Comprised of tool steel material coated with Red Speed Titanium Aluminum Carbon Nitride (TiAICN), you can expect these burrs to last through over 10,000 pounds of coffee before needing a new pair.
How often should grinder burrs be replaced? We recommend changing your filter coffee grinder's burrs every six months, regardless of volume.
