Texas board of nursing continuing education requirements

The Texas Board of Nursing requires nurses to complete 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education (CNE) every two years for relicensure.

Mandatory CNE requirements for Texas registered nurses (RNs), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), and advance practice registered nurses (ARPNs) are in these topic areas:

According to the Texas Board of Nursing License Renewal CEU Requirements, RNs are required to complete 20 contact hours every two years in their area of practice. CE content areas specified in the Texas nurse practice act include:

  • Two contact hours related to forensic evidence collection for any RN practicing in an emergency room setting (one-time requirement)
  • Two contact hours related to older adults and geriatric populations for RNs working with this population
  • Content related to tick-borne diseases for RNs working with this population
  • Two contact hours of continuing education relating to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics before the end of every third two-year licensing period
  • One contact hour related to human trafficking prevention 

Advanced Practice Nurses

In addition to the 20 contact hours of continuing education in the advanced practice role and population focus area or renewal of the certification as specified, an APRN who has Prescriptive Authority must also complete at least five additional contact hours in pharmacotherapeutics within the preceding two years.

In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Pain Management and Prescription of Opioids

RNs, LVNs and APRNs are required 20 contact hours every two years in the area of practice. Nurses whose practice includes older adult or geriatric populations must complete at least 2 contact hours relating to Geriatrics every two years. Nurses who provide direct patient care must complete a human trafficking course approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission every 2 years. Two contact hours of Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics must be completed every third renewal. Nurses who work in an emergency room setting or who perform a forensic examination on a sexual assault survivor must complete a one-time requirement of 2 hours in Forensic Evidence Collection.

APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete an additional 5 contact hours of pharmacotherapeutics every two years.

APRNs who prescribe opioids must complete at least 1 contact hour annually (2 contact hours every two years) that meets the requirements set forth by the Texas Pharmacy Board covering: best practices, alternative treatment options and multi-modal approaches to pain management that may include physical therapy, psychotherapy and other treatments.

APRNs licensed prior to September 1, 2020 and authorized to receive information from the Prescription Monitoring Program must complete a one-time, 2 contact hour course related to approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances. APRNs licensed after September 1, 2020 and authorized to receive information from the PMP must complete 2 hours of continuing education related to approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances no later than 1 year after the APRNs initial licensure date.

APRNs who have entered into a prescriptive authority agreement authorizing the prescribing of opioids must complete 2 hours of continuing education annually (4 contact hours every licensing period) regarding the safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances. This must include education regarding reasonable standards of care, the identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients, and effectively communicating with patients regarding the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substance.

Licensed Midwives are required 20 contact hours every two years, including HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention continuing education per OC 116. Additional requirements includes proof of current CPR certification and proof of current certification for neonatal resuscitation from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Beginning with license renewals on and after September 1, 2022, at least two (2) hours are required on assessing fetal heart rates by intermittent auscultation. (LM licensing and regulatory activities are managed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.)

What are the mandatory CEUs for Texas nurses?

How many CEUs does Texas require?

Texas OT and OTA licensees are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education each renewal period in order to maintain licensure, and the CE must include an HHSC approved course on human trafficking that meets requirements as per the OT Rules.

How do I keep my nursing license active when not working in Texas?

In Texas if your license is inactive and you do not work in nursing for 4 years or more you are required to take a Refresher Course in order to reactivate it. (There is just a fee if less than four years). There is not an active work/employment requirement in Texas.

How many CEUs are needed for ACLS in Texas?

ACLS certification course is approved for 8 CEU/CME contact hours; ACLS recertification course is approved for 4 CEU/CME contact hours.
