Welcome to the University of Miami/Jackson Health System Internal Medicine Residency. I am excited to introduce you to our program. We pride ourselves on providing an innovative and flexible curriculum that allows residents to maximize career development during training. Choosing a residency program is critical to your overall career goals and finding a program that is tailored to your needs is crucial. Our residency training is conducted throughout three very different health systems all located within the Health District in Miami. All three of our institutions are teaching hospitals with residents and fellows acting as the primary providers of clinical care. At Jackson Memorial Hospital, our Jackson Health System parent institution, this often means literally providing the first and only care that many of our patients receive, serving the underserved and the “never served” regardless of their ability to pay. At UHealth Tower, a private institution which is part of the UM Health System, residents experience a largely privately insured population; at the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which is part of the Miami VA Healthcare System, our residents have the opportunity to care for our vulnerable veteran population. We are lucky enough to share faculty among all three health systems; faculty consisting of leaders in their field and, most importantly, passionate about education, clinical care and research. The variety of experiences is a definitive element in becoming a compassionate, confident, knowledgeable and resourceful internist, and affords residents the opportunity to work with patients from different countries, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. We know our program offers the depth and breadth of experience necessary to allow graduates to achieve their desired professional goals and we strive to provide a friendly, open and supportive environment that emphasizes academic excellence and leadership. -Stefanie R. Residents from anesthesia, internal medicine-pediatrics and neurology join us on our journey in their first year of residency. Our program changes rotations every four weeks, allowing for even more flexibility than a traditional one-month block. In a twist on the traditional X+Y block scheduling, we use an innovative X+Y+Z model with a 4+2+2 block schedule. Four-week inpatient blocks are separated by two, two-week blocks, which are a mix of continuity practice and either elective, night relief, quality improvement, research, vacation or wellness. Four-week blocks are reserved for career development, critical care, emergency medicine and inpatient ward opportunities Specialized pathways provide structured career development. Our pathways include: academic medicine, global health, healthcare administration, HIV, primary care and urban health. Each pathway has a core set of electives and/or inpatient experiences designed by faculty and program leadership to capitalize on the vast opportunity within our three institutions.
