Oct 2, 2020 Four years ago I picked up my 2012 DL650 with a Russell Day-Long seat installed by the previous owner. I know these seats are pretty customized for the individual, but the seat worked for me -- especially since I'd never ridden anything other than stock seats. Up until this year, I always felt I could ride all day with it. This year, I noticed
my rear was getting uncomfortable after about an hour of riding. Once I paid attention to it, I felt like I was no longer being 'cradled' in the seat, but that the seat was pushing me forward, closer to the tank. Complicating my diagnosis are a couple of factors. First, I lost a lot of weight this year, so I wonder how much the reduction in natural padding is playing into this. Second, the Aerostich Roadcrafter I picked up this spring is much slipperier on the seat, and I find myself
sliding forward more -- especially under braking -- when I wear that. One thing I've done that's helped a little bit is adjusting my feet on the pegs. I found that when I move my feet forward a bit (resting the middle of my foot on the peg, rather than the ball) I'm better planted in the seat. I don't know if that's a good solution or not. A suggested fix from others I talked to about this is to attach a Sit N Fly seat cover. At $25, it's a cheap attempted correction. The only
thing that's kept me from doing it is that SNF doesn't seem to make a standard size that will fit the RDL. So I'd have to get their largest size and probably custom cut it and staple it for my application. I didn't want to go to that trouble if it turns out the seat itself needs work. Joined

I put an Alaska Sheep Skin cover on my stock S10 seat. It worked wonders. Air flow keeps you cool in summer and wool warms the buns in the winter. Mine never comes off unless it is pouring rain. You can get them dyed or natural. I asked the lady for something natural, but with dark wool. Joined Jun 3, 2015 · 981 Posts
Have any rubber feet / bumpers fallen off the underside (assuming that RDL uses them)? Joined Jul 25, 2006 · 15,011 Posts
Have any rubber feet / bumpers fallen off the underside (assuming that RDL uses them)? Based on the two RDL sesys i have ordered RDL uses the stock seat as a base and modifies the top of it. They don't modify the bottom apart from a hole for the heated seat wire to come though (if you have that option.)

The Beadrider 'ceramic' seat has worked well for me in the past. It also holds your position very well. @bajakirch I have noticed the same thing, sliding forward. I have an RDL (for 6 years) and a new Roadcrafter and it is definitely slipperier. I noticed a slight sliding forward sometimes with
previous riding pants (Olympia & Rev-It) but it was only slight and the pants did not seem slippery. This is more noticeable and the pants do slide easily on the seat but not a problem, so far. I don't have a lot miles on the Roadcrafter though, less the 100, but will add a few thousand very shortly. Will see what happens. PS:
@STCorndog that bike is way too clean.

no one thing works for everybody. a friend swore by the beadrider so I tried one. after several months it took up a place on the garage wall replaced by an inflatable seat cover. the inflatable seat cover works for now. I have had 2 corbin seats and they were worse than stock for me. I am curious about and would like to sit on a seat concepts seat and see
how well they work in the real world. Joined May 4, 2011 · 4,330 Posts
A used RDL is still worth a lot of money, sell it and buy a new one. Joined Dec 25, 2019 · 40 Posts

I had almost the exact same problem with my RDL this year, the seat no longer cradled me and gave me butt pain, but didn't have the sliding forward feeling. The odd thing was the comfortable seat of my other bike which I've had for 30years also was giving me problems. I had lost 25+ lbs, so thought that may be a factor, less natural padding. At the same
time I was experiencing pain in my wrists, shoulder, knee for no apparent reason, even a little butt pain sitting in my work chair. At this point I realized it's me, not the seat. The problem has disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared, along with the other ailments. Here's the full thread with more details. Is My Russell Day Long Worn Out ??!? Beads, sheep skin, now airhawk. Airhawk works for about 2 hours. Snack, walk around and go for 2 more hours. That's my (ass) story, and I'm sticking to it. Joined Aug 30, 2020 · 52 Posts

I have been using Air Hawks for at least two decades now. Have used them on BMW Airheads, Harley, GoldWing, and now the Strom. I never leave home without
it, even have one in the car seat. For me, it just works. Have never had an aftermarket seat on any motorcycle. Joined Nov 12, 2016 · 1,195 Posts
Discussion Starter · #13 · Oct 4, 2020 I have a bead seat I tried out a couple of years ago. I retired it after a couple weeks because I felt it altered my seating position enough that it was causing some lower back pain. I think I'll pull it out for a day ride today to see what if any impact that has.

Discussion Starter · #15 · Oct 8, 2020 Bead seat was a bust. It did nothing to prevent me sliding forward on the seat. Since I was paying more attention to the issue during my day-ride last weekend, I did notice that, when I'm simply cruising down the road, I feel well-planted in the seat cradle. It's when I start braking or hitting the curves that I find myself slipping forward.
At the end of my day, I found my hips were pretty sore/tired from gripping the tank to help keep me in place. Might be time for me to reach out to Russell for advice. |
