How to Check Windows Display Driver Model Version for WDDM Support in Windows

Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) is the graphic driver architecture for video card drivers running Microsoft Windows versions beginning with Windows Vista.

It is a replacement for the previous Windows 2000 and Windows XP display driver model XDDM/XPDM and is aimed at enabling better performance graphics and new graphics functionality and stability. Display drivers in Windows Vista and Windows 7 can choose to either adhere to WDDM or to XDDM. With the removal of XDDM from Windows 8, however, WDDM became the only option.

WDDM provides the functionality required to render the desktop and applications using Desktop Window Manager, a compositing window manager running on top of Direct3D. It also supports new DXGI interfaces required for basic device management and creation. The WDDM specification requires at least Direct3D 9-capable video card and the display driver must implement the device driver interfaces for the Direct3D 9Ex runtime in order to run legacy Direct3D applications; it may optionally implement runtime interfaces for Direct3D 10 and higher.

    WDDM versions for quick reference.

    Operating SystemSupported WDDM Version
    Windows Vista WDDM 1.0
    Windows 7 WDDM 1.1
    Windows 8 WDDM 1.2

    Windows 10 version 1709 WDDM 2.3
    Windows 10 version 1803 WDDM 2.4
    Windows 10 version 1809 WDDM 2.5
    Windows 10 version 1903 WDDM 2.6
    Windows 10 version 2004 WDDM 2.7 and WDDM 2.8
    Windows 10 version 20H2 WDDM 2.9
    Windows 10 version 21H1
    Windows 11
    WDDM 3.0
    Windows 11 build 22262 version 22H2 WDDM 3.1

    @Brink
    Hi Shawn
I am thinking to update (WU) with the "Optional" feature 2004 but worry about my non-DCH (legacy) Intel drivers:
Do you know the WDDM requirements for Windows10 2004 and if drivers need to be DCH compliant?, I have the following: Intel UHD Graphics Driver version: 26.20.100.6911 DirectX 12, WDDM 2.6, by: Khronos Group Inc. v 2.2.10, Vulkan-1

    My other Intel drivers are:
    Intel i7-10510U @ 1.8 GHz v.10.0.18362.693 (Kaby Lake-U/Y)
    Intel WIFI 6 AX201 160MHz, HrP2 v. 21.90.3.2
    Intel Wireless Bluetooth v. 21.20.1.2
    Intel Chipset controller v. 10.1.27.2 (Comet Lake-PCH)

I am getting nowhere with Acer and Intel with my question.

    Thanks
    Frank

    Hello @FrankW,
Wddm compatible driver for windows 7 64 bit download

No worries. Windows 10 only has a minimum requirement of DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.

The table in this tutorial is just for which versions of WDDM start its support in which version of Windows 10.

Windows 10 version 2004 adds support for WDDM 2.7.

Very informative table - thanks for sharing.

A somewhat related question. I built a PC some years ago with an i7-2600K and the intel HD 3000. I checked my WDDM version, it's 1.2 (DirectX v12) and while Windows 10 is not supported with the HD3000 as I understand it, I've been running it under Windows 10 (currently 1909) w/o any problems for several years.

I've had no luck trying to upgrade to WDDM 2.0 (looks like no support from Intel?). MS Office 2019 requires WDDM 2.0+, what to do? Do I buy a cheap video card that can support this (no experience with video cards, not a gamer) or take a chance and install 2019 and hope for the best?

I appreciate any insights you might have to share.

You should be fine from this below:

    Graphics

Windows OS: Graphics hardware acceleration requires DirectX 9 or later, with WDDM 2.0 or higher for Windows 10 (or WDDM 1.3 or higher for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update).

Hi - thanks for the super quick reply.

The problem is I have WDDM 1.2, so that doesn't seem to fit the requirements, no?

That would only affect if you wanted to use graphics hardware acceleration. Otherwise, it will still work just fine.

Ah .. I focused on the wrong information, should have focused more on this phrase "Graphics hardware acceleration requires" .. very cool. Thank you so much!
