What order to watch lord of the rings reddit

I would recommend starting with Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King. The theatrical cuts are shorter but not as good as extended editions. Some of the greatest adaptations, or even most beloved films of all time. These are adaptations of the classic books by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Hobbit movie trilogy is mediocre at best, it was released after but the story is set before the Lord of the Rings. I would not recommend at all but they have a few good moments. This is a very loose adaptation of the classic book by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Rings of Power series is an original story from Amazon Studios loosely based on some notes from the Appendices of the Lord of the Rings books. There are only two episodes so far so I don't think anyone can give it any kind of objective review. Reception so far can best be described as "divisive."

Of course, ideally you should read the classic novels by J.R.R. Tolkien!

I'd say watch Lord of the Rings first, from beginning to end, and then, if you absolutely must, watch The Hobbit movies.

But, in my opinion, The Hobbit movies are not particularly good, and they spend a lot of time retroactively forcing in moments to the story in order to act as a much larger, more integral prequel to LotR.

There's a reason Jackson and New Line didn't start with The Hobbit, and that's that you just don't really need it to enjoy or follow LotR. But you kind of do need the LotR films in order to find much, if any, enjoyment in The Hobbit movies.

  1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (extended edition)

  2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (extended edition)

  3. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (extended edition)

  4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition)

  5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (extended edition)

  6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (extended edition)

That is the order of the story and, more significantly, of the storytelling. But beyond that, there are two reasons why this order is the best: a minor one is that by beginning with An Unexpected Journey, you'll be eased into the longer entries in the series gradually. This, in turn, also means you can start with the extended edition right off of the bat: in An Unexpected Journey, the difference is a meager 12 minutes, whereas in The Fellowship of the Ring its about 30 minutes, and so new audiences are forced to start with the theatrical and then watch the extended the second time around, which is a pity.

But there's another - much more important reason - so important, in fact, that it will trounce any reason anyone in this thread will give you against this viewing order, and its as simple as this: watching The Hobbit first doesn't spoil any major plot elments of The Lord of the Rings, whereas watching The Lord of the Rings first DOES spoil major plot elements of The Hobbit.

The filmmakers wanted this to be the viewing order for new audiences going forward. See, for instance, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5USiVMpybg

The best order to watch Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies with an 8 year old?

What order to watch lord of the rings reddit

level 1

An 8 year old might actually really like the Hobbit trilogy and not fully appreciate the LotR trilogy. So going against what would be the common suggestion here, I'd say show them the Hobbit trilogy first and then when they're a bit older, like 12-14, show them the LotR trilogy.

level 2

I agree. At 11 when lotr came out I found it boring and hard to understand, 2 years later I throughly enjoyed it.

level 2

This! Also, the old animated Hobbit is great for kids.

level 1

I would watch either with an 8 year old. I would read the books to him/her.

level 1

The best order for watching any franchise is always to watch it according to the release date. I would suggest you choose the theatrical version than the extended version, as the extended version has too much information that an 8 year old may find boring.

First the Hobbit movies, then the Lord of The Rings movies. The Hobbit movies are first chronologically and, even though the Lord of the Rings films released almost 20 years ago, the visual effects really hold up, so it won't be jarring going from newer to older movies. Also, the Lord of the Rings are better films, so the movies will be getting better as you watch.

A lot of people in the thread are saying that you should skip the Hobbit completely, but I don't agree. Sure they're not as good as they could (maybe should) have been, but they are not completely unwatchable. They have some slightly redeeming qualities. And if you watch them first, you will appreciate the Lord of the Rings movies even more!

What is the correct order to watch Lord of the Rings?

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)

Should U watch The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings first?

The films are based on the 1937 novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien and follow the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Frodo's uncle. So if you want to follow a timeline that's true to Tolkien's novels, you should begin with The Hobbit trilogy.

Should I watch The Hobbit or LotR first Reddit?

Watch the LotR movies first. The Hobbit, as filmed, assumes knowledge of the LotR movies and acts as a prequel to it. That's different from the books, where The Hobbit was written first without LotR in mind.
