Make sure it's compatible with the your model. Watch a YouTube video and follow the instructions, quite simple and worth the effort. My lawnmower is running like new now.

This is a genuine Briggs & Stratton kit at a reasonable price. It includes parts for a wide range of carburetors. There will likely be some parts you don't need, and it may not include all the parts you want. If you go to the briggsandstratton.com parts-lookup page for your particular engine model, it will show this kit and list which parts fit your carb. In my case, I needed to buy the gasket between the carb and intake manifold separately.

The kit also includes a useful instruction sheet (which doesn't seem to be online). But, there are couple of points that instructions don't mention. You probably don't need to remove and replace the welch-plugs (unless the existing ones are corroded or damaged). More important: when installing the new rubber seat for the intake needle valve, you need to use fairly strong pressure to make sure it is fully bottomed out. If you don't have a 3/16" punch, use the flat back-end of a 3/16" drill bit. To check the seat, turn the carb upside-down after the needle and float are installed. The float should be level with the needle resting on the seat. If the seat isn't fully inserted, the float will still be at an angle, and little or no gas will reach the bowl. (The float level isn't adjustable on most of the carburetors this kit fits.) Also, after you install the bowl, you should be able to hear/feel the float move when you turn the carb over (assuming it is empty of gas).

In my case, my carb wasn't getting any gas before the rebuild, because the valve-seat was clogged. After thoroughly cleaning and installing the new parts, it was frustrating to have the exact same problem. But, it was due to the fact that the bottom of the bowl was pushing the float up enough to stop the gas flow, because the seat wasn't inserted far enough.

PS to amazon: Why is "sheerness" listed as a feature for this item? That's not even a word, except as an English seaport!

I needed to rebuild my original 498170 Briggs Carburetor after I purchased a new one so I’d have a spare on hand and this kit will do so on a multitude of carbs. However, purchasing a new one was a total waste of money based on the junk I received that was poorly cast and had many gouges on the mounting surfaces... it was a Briggs OEM in their box. The better choice would to have just rebuilt the original and skipped the new one. I needed this for my Craftsman 22-inch mower and if you’re doing a similar mower you will have a lot of parts left because the carb does very little since it doesn’t have a throttle setting, fuel setscrew or a choke mechanism. You pretty much are doing the work in the bowl so it’s both easy and fast. I just don’t like stopping in the middle of what I’m doing to rebuild a card since they tend to fade during use. It’s easy to swap one out and get back to mowing my few acres that I can’t get with the riding mower. The most common problem with a mower carb is a dirty filter or something made it into the bowl and is clogging it. I have a lot of big old outdoor power equipment and have either rebuilt or replaced a lot of carbs and the one on my mower is by far the easiest one I have done… though it can take some work to remove it. I have the same carb on another mower that I replaced with a 7-buck Chinese model carb and it’s actually better built that the 35-buck Briggs 799868 I purchased as a replacement. This was a genuine Briggs kit that came in one of their boxes but it was missing an O-ring that I needed so it lost one star because half the parts were in a bag and the other half was loose in the box and most likely slid out the bottom during handling. I just purchased the O-ring for under 2-bucks rather than going through a pain to return it.

Great kit & oh what a difference it made! I have a craftsman push mower with Briggs & Stratton 6.5 engine, got it at Sears maybe 6 years ago. This kit comes with more pieces than you'll use, but which bowl o-ring since there were two? I watched more youtube vidz and as far as I could tell it was the thinner of the 2 large o-rings. They were both the same size diameter, and both flat-sided like a rubber band, but one extended over while the other was just shy of hugging the rim of the carb. I used the one that was shy-of since the bowl was snug to where the bottom screw went. Have re-assembled and it isn't leaking gas so it's okay. The original bowl o-ring on mine was so mashed that it tore apart when I pulled the bowl off.

I also used one of the foam rings for the plastic throttle that holds the butterfly. A youtube vid showed how the butterfly could be pushed through its slotted plastic piece, then the plastic piece pulled out so you could insert the foam ring to sit just below where the throttle connects to the spring/wire mechanism on the engine. I didn't see one on mine but I put it on anyway.

I didn't bother with the welch plug replacement, but next time I will. Found a vid where the guy just used a small flathead screw driver inserted into the little slot next to the welch plug to pop it out. I cleaned the carb extra well using a small wire and paper clip into the holes. I used Gunk brand carb cleaner which is Naptha and seemed to destroy the valve gasket (tiny red & very easy to lose) but perhaps it was already brittle. My valve gasket came out in many tiny pieces even though I used a small screw to try to pull it out. I used a drill bit end that fit the valve hole to push in the new red gasket. I will use B&S carb cleaner next time to see if it's better.

One vid guy suggested putting an ounce of oil in the spark plug hole before the spark plug... I will never do that again!!! The mower spit oil all out the muffler and of course burn-smelling thick smoke from all that oil continued to come out for 20 minutes even after I took the muffler off and blew out the oil the best I could with compressed air. But my mower now runs strong, and actually starts right back up when I need to pause mowing.
