Can’t add Music to Your Instagram Reel?

3 Top Problems on Instagram Reels for Business accounts Solved

Instagram Reels – I loved it and had to try it, but I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t add music to my Instagram reel – so I had to do some research and here’s what I’ve found.
Have you thought of incorporating Instagram reels into your business marketing strategy? Reels is a great way to create short, engaging videos on Instagram to educate and engage with your customers.
The Reels feature, launched in August 2020 to combat the swift growth of Tik Tok, is a marriage between an Instagram Story and IGTV which has quickly become extremely popular. Instagram says that 45% of all videos posted to the platform are under 15 seconds, which was the initial limit – but now you can add up to 30 second Reels. Think fast, catchy and fun content.
Reels provide more features than Stories, with video editing tools like speed controls, AR effects, countdown, a new align tool and a timer. The best part about Reels is that since the main feature of Reels is audio, you can expect that someone watching Reels has their volume on – so it’s a great platform to share your voice and get your message across.

Let’s get started with Reels for Business

This isn’t designed to be a tutorial on how to create an Instagram reel – there are many tutorials out there which will teach you that perfectly. Just google “Instagram Reels” and take your pick.
What this blog discusses are three core problems you might face when creating Reels for your business account. We’ve explained the solutions to these problems so that you are instead of of wasting time tearing your hair out, you can get on with enjoy creating a Reel that you’re damn proud of.

Problem 1 – Can’t add Music to Your Instagram Reel.

Are you seeing this?

Your Business account on Instagram Reels will not have music enabled.

Are you watching Instagram Reels and loving the fact that you can dance away while captions do all the talking for you? I love it! But my account does not have the music feature available.
Are you in the same boat? Then I presume you’ve googled- ‘instagram reels no audio’ and you were taken to a site that asked you to uninstall and reinstall the app and jump through various hoops. But no, that doesn’t work because according to Instagram, since you’re a business account, you cannot use Copyrighted Music without paying royalty for business purposes. End of story.
So, no music yet on Business accounts.

Solution – Add your own music

Here are the steps to add music to your Reels in a Business account.

  • Record your reel in Instagram, without adding music.
  • Download it. It will save as a video in your gallery.
  • Now open your gallery, select the video, and click on edit.
  • Here, replace the background sound with your own free to use audio. I use https://www.bensound.com/ (Link not Sponsored) to download Copyright Free music.
  • Save the video.
  • Open Instagram Reels again and select your edited video.
  • Get Reeling! And enjoy the music.

Problem 2 – Reels video cropped in feed-What size should Instagram Reels be?

Did you create a Reel that you want to show off on your Instagram post grid too, but your video is now awkwardly cropped and bits of your captions are missing?

Solution – Create to the right ratios

Firstly, here are three aspect ratios for you to remember – 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1.

Instagram Reels are shot on the full size of your phone screen which is a 9:16 ratio. This works brilliantly for Stories and Reels, but when Reels embed in your Instagram feed where followers will first see them, they are displayed at 4:5 – which is why the top and bottom bits of your video are cropped off. And the thumbnail of the Reel on your grid is of course 1:1.
People can tap to see the full reel but many won’t.

So, while creating a Reel, leave some space on top and bottom of your screen. Don’t put any content or captions you want seen in there. Keep all the action in the centre ‘square’.

Next create a cover image with your brand colours and use this as the Cover Image. Reels will give you the option of using a specific cover image. Use the cover image you’ve created instead of a screen grab from the video – the quality will likely be better too as Reels down-specs the video quality.

Problem 3 – You lost your Reel while creating it

You were creating a Reel, but the baby needed a change, or the phone rang – and by the time you go back to your creative process, it has disappeared.

Solution – Save your Reels draft

Yes! There’s a Save as Draft function which is great for pre-creating reels. Go ahead and make your Reel as usual but instead of tapping Share at the end of the process, tap Save as Draft underneath the Share button. When you are ready to share, find the draft in the Reels tab on your profile.
