These two fan favorites could be getting a new lease on life.

Reports indicate that two entries in the Zelda franchise, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, could be coming to the Nintendo Switch at some point later this year. Both games are fan favorites and widely viewed as classics.

The news comes from journalist Jeff Grubb who pointed out during the latest episode of his podcast, Jeff Grubb’s Game Mess, that a ported version of the two games might just be on the horizon for the Nintendo Switch. Rumors to the effect that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess could be coming to the platform have long been making the rounds, but Grubb is apparently confident that fans of the Zelda franchise have something to look forward to in the very near future.

Grubb said that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess could be released on the Nintendo Switch as a bundle. “They want to have a Zelda game every year and they’ve been holding onto this,” Grubb remarked. “Why wouldn’t they just put it out this year?” The journalist went on to say that “if they don’t put this out or some other Zelda thing this year, instead of just waiting for Breath of the Wild 2, I just will not understand.”

“I think that this game as much as it was a joke in the Megabit 64 video, I do believe will actually come out in October,” Grubb noted in reference to the bundle. “I suppose Zelda could come out in September maybe, but they already got some games in September, so October still sounds right to me.” The bundle in question could be similar to the recently released Super Mario 3D All Stars.

There currently are three mainline games in the Zelda franchise on the Nintendo Switch. These are of course The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link’s Awakening, and Skyward Sword. While the former was actually developed for the platform, the latter two games were a remake and a remaster, respectively.

Fans have been wishing that Zelda: Twilight Princess will get a Switch release date since the console launched. Since it’s the 35th anniversary of the series, one would think that Nintendo would bring Twilight Princess to its latest console, especially since an HD version was made for the Wii U that could be a straight port.

Will The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess get a Switch release date?

It doesn’t seem as though Zelda: Twilight Princess will get a Switch release date. Despite rumors of a Zelda 35th anniversary collection being in production, series creator Eiji Aonuma shut down any hope that Twilight Princess would be releasing on the Switch, at least this year. Unfortunately, Aonuma stated, that Skyward Sword HD would be the only Zelda title to be released on the Switch to celebrate the anniversary at E3 2021.

Unfortunately, Nintendo is bad at leveraging its back catalog, so it’s unlikely that Twilight Princess will be coming to the Switch in the near future, if ever. Oddly, Wii U titles that moved fewer copies than Twilight Princess HD have been ported to the Switch, but the company’s decisions rarely make sense to fans.

Unlike Wind Waker, which was originally met with ridicule due to its cartoonish, cel-shaded art style, Twilight Princess was immediately praised. Ironically, over the years, Wind Waker has become the more beloved entry in the series. However, Twilight Princess is still looked upon fondly.

We will be getting Skyward Sword HD, but it seems like a strange choice given that Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, and Majora’s Mask are more fondly remembered. Perhaps if Skyward Sword sells well, we’ll finally get a chance to play the other 3D Zelda titles on the Switch. For now, we wouldn’t hold our breath about their odds of coming to the console.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct brought all sorts of exciting announcements. The Legend of Zelda series was one area of focus for the broadcast, with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity receiving an expansion pass and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD being announced. Series producer Eiji Aonuma also confirmed that more details regarding The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s unnamed sequel will be revealed later this year. Some Zelda fans expressed disappointment regarding the Direct, hoping for more Zelda content to celebrate the 35th anniversary. However, according to journalist Andy Robinson of Video Games Chronicle (VGC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are “100% coming this year” to Switch. This would make sense as both games are among the remaining few Wii U titles yet to make their way to the Nintendo Switch.

Is this likely to happen?

Robinson has a good track record when it comes to the rumor mill. Last year, VGC reported that Super Mario 3D All-Stars existed in March, way before its announcement in September. If this is anything to go off, we may have more Zelda content on Switch than we originally expected. The remasters of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are likely to happen on Switch because they’re probably already raring to go.

In my personal opinion, I believe that Nintendo is probably wanting to wait until after March 31, 2021, as that is when all the Mario 35th anniversary celebrations end. It probably doesn’t want to shift focus onto another franchise just yet, but hopefully fans have more to be looking forward to later in the year. Also, next week will see Pokémon celebrating its 25th anniversary on Feb. 27.

Although it may not be what you wanted, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD seems like a perfect fit for the anniversary celebrations. The game tells the origin story of key events, such as the creation of the Master Sword and Hyrule itself. If you weren’t a fan of the Wii version’s motion controls, Nintendo has confirmed that the game will also have button controls.
