2004 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 throttle position sensor

If your TPS is acting up, you'll have some wacky acceleration and unusual gear changes. If that sounds like your Jeep, it's time to replace your sensor.

This article applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ (1999-2004)

The throttle position sensor (TPS) is a very simple device. The TPS measures the position of the throttle and sends these signals back to your Jeep's powertrain control module (PCM). If the throttle is depressed 50% of the way, the PCM will adjust the rate of spark and fuel delivery to the engine to keep everything running right. Additionally, the transmission also relies on the TPS for feedback to improve shift quality and timing. Is your Jeep running erratically with a stalling or bucking engine, or improper gear changes? You might just have a faulty TPS. We'll show you how to replace it with minimal hassle and get your Jeep running properly once again.

Materials Needed

  • T20 Torx bit and driver

Step 1 – Remove the old throttle position sensor

On the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the TPS is located on top of the engine on the driver's side of the intake manifold. It is held in place by two Torx screws. Remove these two screws with your T20 Torx bit and driver. Once the screws are removed, disconnect the harness and pull the throttle position sensor out of the vehicle.

Step 2 – Install new throttle position sensor

Slide the new throttle position sensor into place, being very careful not to move the air intake and pushing on it just hard enough to lock it into place without accidentally adjusting anything in the process. You will feel a little bit of play in the sensor, but don't be alarmed because this is perfectly normal. Reinstall the two screws and tighten them with your T20 Torx bit and driver. Reconnect the wiring harness to the back of the throttle position sensor. Start the Jeep and check for any issues, then take it for a test drive to ensure everything is running smoothly.
