Just wondering what kind of average MPG to expect on a stock Wrangler Unlimited (Sahara if it makes a difference - but I don’t believe it does). Jeep.com says 15 city and 19 hwy but we all know how accurate manufacturer fuel economy ratings are.

Thanks guys.

For the Sahara, that's about right. (It has street tires.) Upgrading to a Rubicon (with mud tires) will drop it.

In my 08 Rubicon I get about 16 around town. Haven't been on any trips since I got it so can't tell you for the highway sorry.

On my stock Sahara 08 JK (auto 3.73), in the 2000 miles I've put on it, tankful averages have been between a tick under 17 with mostly city, to just under 24 mostly freeway. I'm quite pleased with those numbers. Don't know the JKU numbers to report.

Our '07 stock Rubicon gets 20mpg on the highway.... Hubby has put about 5000 highway miles on it since June. Oh, but ours is a 2Dr.

It depends on several factors that contribute to weight and rolling resistance on the Jeep. If the model your looking at has street tires aka non aggressive treads, then those numbers will most likely average around mid to high 17s in the city possibly and closer to 20-21 or greater on the hwy. If you have a soft top instead of a hard top, the MPG will be increased from less weight. If you have alloy wheels instead of steel wheels, you can get better mileage as well with street, AT, or MT tires. Last but not least, your MPG will benefit more from a manual tranny and light foot.

My 2010 JK 2 door manual tranny with soft top + 17" alloy + mud terrains gets mid 17s in city and 19-20 on the interstate. I have the lightest possible set up though with all things (i.e. soft top, two door, alloys) to run Mud terrains and still get good MPG as a daily driver. Hope this helps -

JK Rubicon. By the time you put on the good stuff, you will be smiling if you get 15mpg - highway / city - does not matter....you are just glad it is not at 11mpg.....

I have an 08 Sahara unlimited with about 30K on it now and I drive it on the highway with cruise control mostly. Cruise control will give me better mileage @ 70mph than if it was just my foot on the gas pedal.

If I'm on I-5 (California) everybody else is going 75-80 or better and that will kick the mileage down as opposed to going 65-70. So my point is if you drive on the highway with cruise control you will get better mileage.

When your in town or off cruise all bets are off. It's according to how heavy your boots are!

im sure you have all heard of the show TOP GEAR and if not i hope you go watch the english version on youtube it is an unreal show....anyway they tested the whole cruise control theory out and it acctually lowers MPG's by a little bc the throttle is being pressed more using a little more gas......i love that showwww

2010 unlimited rubicon with automatic and soft top. everything is stock with the exception being a superchips flashpaq. I now have 6000 miles and an running 17-19 mpg.
I also noticed a fairly significant gain in mpg with shell gas vs whatever was cheap.

I must be doing something wrong seeing some of you getting 17+. I have a stock 11 Sahara Unlimited and have never seen above 13.5 (on a good tank!) around town. I am rarely on the highway since I bought it in December, so I can't speak for that just yet. All I know is my wife gets better mileage in her Tahoe LT!

'11 Rubicon Unlimited and I am averaging 16.5 - 17.3 city driving. 6spd manual, and it all depends on shift points. Generally, I shift 2-5th gears at 2,500rpm, 1st generally around 3,000. If I run all my shifts up through 3,000 it drops down to 16 - 16.5 mpg.

2010 JK 2 dr, soft top, stock 16" 225/70R16 (i think) I get about 16city, up to 19 highway, 6 speed. Only have 1500miles so maybe those numbers will go up. I go at about average or slightly above speeds.
I run most of my shifts up to 3000/3500 rpms.

It could be how you drive affecting the mileage. How far do you press the accelerator down when you start from a dead stop? That has a direct impact on mileage...if you press it down in between changing gears or just give it a little gas will make a difference in mileage.

Ill take any advice I can get on how to increase mileage. I do think I am pretty conservative on how I accelerate though. My wife criticizes me that I drive too slow!
