Being able to use your defroster is a must, especially if you live in an area that sees harsh winters. Sadly, issues with the blend door and/or actuators can prevent your defrost function from working, leaving you in a potentially dangerous situation if your windows fog up while driving.

Are there any open Dodge RAM blend door recalls?

As of September 2020, no formal recalls have been issued on this part. Still, many documented NHTSA complaints and Vehicle History reviews report ongoing problems with the Dodge RAM’s heat blend door and actuator.

You can read more about these complaints in our summaries below. If your Dodge RAM is exhibiting similar issues, you might also consider filing your own complaint with the NHTSA to let the manufacturer know.

At the end of this article, we’ll also explain how to check your truck for open safety recalls.

2006 Dodge RAM 1500: Heat Blend Door Malfunction

NHTSA Complaint IDs: 11306602, 11209481

In one February 2020 NHTSA complaint, a 2006 Dodge RAM owner claimed that the heat blend doors stopped working and became stuck in the “vent” position. As a result, the driver claimed he or she had heat but no defroster. Because the driver lived in Ohio, this became an issue with winter driving.

In a similar complaint filed in May of 2019, another 2006 RAM 1500 owner mentioned that the control box for the vehicle’s heating and cooling system was defective and broke at the blend door. As a result, the defroster and air conditioning became disabled.

The driver claimed that this can cause unsafe driving conditions, as the windows could fog up without warning—and with no defroster, there was no way to clear the windows.

2007 Dodge RAM 1500: Faulty Blend Door Actuators

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11057673

In this December 2017 complaint filed with the NHTSA, the owner of a 2007 Dodge RAM 1500 reported that the blend door actuators (which are responsible for controlling the direction of hot/cold air) were faulty and failed prematurely.

The owner also mentioned that when the truck was brought to a mechanic for service, the mechanic said that they were fixing this issue on Dodge RAM trucks at least twice per week.

Because the truck’s dashboard must be pulled out to perform the actuator repair, the mechanic mentioned that this was usually a $1,000 fix.

What to Do if Your Dodge RAM is Recalled

Even though there haven’t been any recalls issued on the Dodge RAM’s heat blend doors, you should still check your truck for open safety recalls regularly. You can do this by going to the NHTSA recall page and entering your truck’s 17-digit VIN.

If you see any recalls on your truck, have them repaired right away. You can get assistance in scheduling your repairs by contacting Dodge customer service at 1-800-423-6343. When scheduling a repair, be sure to reference the NHTSA recall number as well.

How do I know if my blend door actuator is working?

Try blasting cold or hot air and, under normal circumstances, the air should come out according to your controls. If you are trying to blast cold air, but it is coming out hot, even after giving your car a few minutes to adjust, then that is a pretty good indication that you need a new blend door actuator.

What is the difference between blend door and blend door actuator?

The blend door can open and close at various positions to block or allow air passing through the heater core in order to achieve the desired temperature inside of the vehicle. The blend door actuator is typically located closer to the heater core and evaporator than the mode door.

Are there 2 blend door actuators?

The blend door actuator decides whether the air is going to come through the mid-vent, floor vents, and control defrost, and so on. Some cars have a dual blend door actuator that enables the driver to control the climate in different time zones.
