It's very long but shows fluid level

My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the W5A580 (NAG1) transmission has a "For Dealer Use Only" cap where a transmission dipstick would normally go. FYI, you need to use pliers to remove this by turning it counter-clockwise. I like that this kit comes with a replacement cap since my original one is a bit scratched up now and I assume the cap in this kit won't require pliers to remove or put back in place (haven't tried it yet).

After reading various posts online about changing the transmission fluid/filter in the NAG1, I decided to make my own dipstick with zip ties. I taped three 14" zip ties together and marked the end at 5mm intervals. This didn't work very well for me. I would get different readings each time. Measuring with the oil cold also didn't work well since the oil tended to stick to the sides of the tube then stuck to the sides of the zip-tie making it difficult to see where the actual line was.

This dipstick gave consistent readings once I marked how deep to go before it hit the pan. The first time using it I pressed it more after touching the pan and it did flex a bit and give an inaccurate reading. It does not go in all the way and is not intended to be left in the vehicle (thus the separate cap). This product helped me to be much more confident that my transmission fluid level is correct.

For the price alone, thereโ€™s no reason not to own one of these of you have a typical โ€œdipsticklessโ€ Chrysler transmission. Itโ€™s common to modify the dip stick, but the fluid is very sensitive to temperature and the more accurate the reading you can get with the temperature marks on this dipstick this better.

The price was good & multi-car depth chart was good, there is NO clear description of how far the stick will go in. It is a very long coil, so when you have nearly 2' of extra length left, you're not sure if it's inserted the correct distance.

Worked great for my 08' 300C. Checked my levels after a lengthy drive and verified my levels were right on what the included charts said it should be. Used my trusty MityVac to clean out what was in the pan and refilled with fresh fluids. Another drive to get up to temp and checked my levels again and we were dead on what the charts said it should be. Fresh fluids and we're shifting like butter now. Like many others have mentioned, STOP when you hit the pan! Don't push it past that point or you can get a misread or worse get the dip stick stuck in the pan!

This fit into the same location as the previous oil dipstick, but it does not go in quite as far as it should. I cannot get an accurate oil level check because of this. The yellow plastic on the end being extra thick is the reason why. Oh well, at least I can get my oil changed now as my mechanic refused service due to my old dipstick being broken and stuck inside the slot.

The dipstick works just right! The best part is that it matches the oil dipstick so the engine looks its best.

2009 Chrysler T&C, 6 speed transmission โ€ฆ
Found there is a small plate at the bottom of the dipstick tube.
If you bought this POS dipstick, make sure you only insert it until you feel it bottom out on that plate.
The dipstick is about 4.75 inches too long.
You can shove it in all the way to store it (slides past plate) and only insert until it bottoms out to check it.
Ridiculous to even have to mess with it at all.

You can correct the issue: remove the tiny roll pin in the handle, pull the handle off the rod, cut 4.75 inches off the top of the rod, use the cut off portion of rod to guage where to drill the roll pin hole, drill it, reinsert the handle and roll pin. Too low a priority for me to fiddle with!

New dipstick purchased to replace the one I lost. I later found where I misplaced the old one. Now there are two dipsticks for my van's transmission. Oh Well. Item is rather spendy.

Why is there no transmission dipstick?

If you have a late-model car, it may not have a dipstick for checking the transmission fluid. Not only does this make it difficult to check fluid level and condition, it also eliminates the dipstick tube or opening through that fluid is normally added to an automatic transmission.
