today's vehicles don't have a transmission dipstick, the fluid level / fill plug and drain plug are on the bottom of the transmission pan under the car. Have a shop check the level if you think it is low from leaks.

The engine in your 2012 Jeep Patriot should be running when you perform a transmission fluid level check, otherwise it will be inaccurate. The video above shows where the transmission fluid dipstick is located in your Patriot and how to check the transmission fluid level. If the transmission fluid level in your Patriot is low, you need to add transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. When adding transmission fluid to your Patriot, be sure to add it slowly as it will fill up quickly and is difficult to remove excess fluid if you overfill.

If you are having problems with the transmission in your Patriot, such as clunky shifting or hesitation, check the fluid level first - it is amazing how many drivers pay thousands of dollars for transmission work when a half quart of transmission fluid would have fixed the problem.

If you have a late-model car, it may not have a dipstick for checking the transmission fluid. Not only does this make it difficult to check fluid level and condition, it also eliminates the dipstick tube or opening through that fluid is normally added to an automatic transmission.

Does a 2015 Jeep Patriot have a transmission dipstick?

Find the transmission dipstick, which is usually brightly colored and toward the back of the engine. Remove the dipstick, being careful not to spill or drip any fluid. Wipe off the dipstick with a clean rag, just as you would do when checking the engine oil.
