High volume performance upgrade for 689-M295 OE replacement oil pump. 18% increase in volume over M295 and 10295 oil pump. The cast aluminum housing is CNC-machined and hardcoat anodized. The cast iron cover is CNC-machined and phosphate coated. The relief valve features a screw-in valve plug with the optional lower stock pressure spring supplied. The factory LS oil pump suffers from cavitation above 6,200 RPM, which results in a drop in oil flow of nearly 1 GPM by 7,000 RPM. This cavitation can also aerate the oil, which causes drops in oil pressure and can result in oil starvation. This is why we do not recommend shifting any higher than 6,200 RPM with a stock engine. Engines that run at RPM's above 6,200 should use an upgraded Melling pump to prevent these issues. The Melling 10296 pump flows 18% more oil than the factory oil pump, topping out at about 8 GPM (versus approximately 6.8 GPM for the factory oil pump). The additional oil volume can improve engine lubrication, but caution should be used when selecting this pump for racing applications as the higher volume can sometimes accelerate oil starvation by pumping oil out of the oil sump faster than it can be returned. We don't recommend using this pump with the smaller capacity oil pans (less than 6 quarts). The pump also includes a stiffer pressure relief spring, which increases the maximum system oil pressure by 10%. This higher maximum pressure can help negate drops in oil pressure caused by the addition of an oil cooler setup. This oil pump is compatible with LS engines featuring Variable Valve Timing (VVT). This oil pump should NOT be used with engines that feature Active Fuel Management (AFM) or Displacement on Demand (DoD). Engines with AFM/DoD require a higher flow pump. See Melling p/n 689-10355 for AFM/DoD engines.

Is a high volume oil pump worth it?

A High-Volume Pump will push more oil through the system. It has larger gears to move more oil per revolution. These pumps are good for performance engines with larger bearing clearances. The added oil will help maintain oil pressure and carry away heat.

Will a high volume oil pump increase pressure?

Increases in the engine's oil requirements come from higher RPM, being able to rev faster, increased bearing clearances, remote oil cooler and/or filter and any combination of these. Most high volume pumps also have a increase in pressure to help get the oil out to the bearings faster.

How do I know if I need a high volume oil pump?

A high-volume oil pump is also necessary if you're building a performance engine with larger bearing clearances (more than . 0025-inch at the main and rod bearings if using 20W-50 racing oil).

How much oil pressure should a 5.3 LS have?

To help you, we have consulted with automobile experts, and here's their answer. Generally, oil pressure for a Chevy 5.3 Vortec ranges from 25 to 65 psi. But while idling, there is a tendency for the pressure to fall between 30-20 psi. Your car engine needs to be adequately lubricated all the time.
