Description of Event:

A Day in the Country is the community festival held on the Chapel grounds each first Saturday in October. It will feature food, music, artisans, crafts, tours of the Chapel, Barbecue Cook-Off, the famous 63-Egg Cake and children's games and rides. Hours: 9:00am - 4:00pm

63 Egg Cake

MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - This is exactly how a Fall festival should look, children having fun. Children having fun, moms and dads chatting and shopping.

"We come every year. It's a great treat for the folks in Madison County, a great day, the weather is beautiful, the kids are really having a good time," said Arthur Johnston of Madison.

Chapel of The Cross in Madison has been doing this for 32 years and more families come out every year.

Along with the fun, the church itself is an attraction.

"This church was consecrated in 1852, it has a great deal of pre-civil war history to tell", said church member Sloan McKellar.

Some more stories can be found at the bake table. Church members worked night and day making about 1,000 loaves of bread for the sale and each year you'll see the 63 egg cake. Smaller versions are sold by the slice until it's time for the bigger cake to be cut.

Each child seems to have a favorite activity.

"I like the water slides, like the water slides,playing football,mostly the dunking," said Christian and Jonas.

I like the face painting. What do you like the best? Face painting, added Avy and Peyton.

Funds raised from the Day in the Country go to the continued restoration of the church and community outreach projects.
